Location

This idyllic coastal hideaway is situated on a tranquil private beach on the Kenyan Coast just 30 minutes from Ukunda Airport. Look out to clear turquoise waters that shimmer under the sunlight, and feel the warm, powder-soft sands underfoot - Kinondo Kwetu is simply heavenly and you’ll have 16 acres of this paradise to yourselves.

The surrounding area, made up of rocky cliffs, holy forests and even more glorious coastline, is protected, and the nearest hotel is 2km away, guaranteeing you privacy and peace throughout your stay.

Beach Villas and Cottages

There are several villas and cottages to choose from. For a smaller family, we will arrange a stay in a quaint, two-bedroom cottage. Larger groups will enjoy the extra space and privacy of a larger villa. Coastal decor sets a tropical tone inside, but you will spend most of your time outdoors, exploring in the sun.
Kinondo Kwetu is renowned for its cuisine, which benefits from locally produced fruits and vegetables. Three-course lunches and dinners are served al fresco, with fresh fish and seafood being natural favourites. There are two pools here, one large and deep, and the other a little smaller. The latter is shaded and quiet, the perfect spot to relax with your book, whilst the former is ideal for sunbathing with a glass of something cool closeby.

Gear Up for Watersports

Take to the sea for an exciting array of watersports. Above the waves, kite and windsurfing, paddleboarding, tubing and water skiing or wakeboarding are all options. Charter a boat to deeper waters and cast out for red snapper and dorado on a deep-sea fishing excursion. Below the surface, you can dive and snorkel among shoals of fish and glittering coral reefs. Back on shore, enjoy a relaxing yoga class or time in the spa, while youngsters splash around the pool.

Activities at the Lodge and Further Afield

There is something for everyone to enjoy. Onsite stables cater to riders of all abilities. Enjoy guided rides on the shore and through the surrounding sacred forest. The Andersson family are happy to take you on cultural excursions to nearby villages and local markets.

If you haven't had your fill of safari, take a game drive or nature walk in the nearby Shimba Hills National Reserve. Here, you can spot forest elephants and sable antelope that live among the trees. Back at the lodge challenge your family to a game of tennis or golf, or let the kids hone their skills at the Kinondo Kwetu skatepark.
Just a short walk from Kinondo Kwetu, the Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest offers a fascinating glimpse into the spiritual and ecological heritage of the Mijikenda people. As the first sacred forest in Kenya to welcome controlled ecotourism, it provides a rare opportunity to explore ancient coral rag forests, home to towering trees, twisting lianas, playful monkeys, and vibrant birdlife.

Local guides share stories of the sacred rituals still practiced here, offering a deeper connection to the cultural traditions that have protected this unique ecosystem for centuries.

What Really Matters to Young Children on a Kenya Safari

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!
