Location

Nestled between Mount Kenya and the Mathews Mountain Range, Laikipia Wilderness Camp is situated on a vast private conservancy, affording spectacular views that extend for miles around. An area of incredible natural beauty comprising hills, forests and open plains home to incredibly diverse wildlife. The conservancy has particularly high concentrations of elephant and two packs of the elusive wild dog. Lion, leopard, hippo and buffalo are just a few more of the well-known species that can be seen here. There have even been confirmed sightings of a melanistic leopard around camp in recent times! Over 350 different species of birds have been recorded in the area.

Your Personal Bush Camp

Here you’ll find six canvas tents, four of which are perfect for families. With a double bed and four twins, one extra-large suite even has space for a family of six! Understated luxury is the order of the day here. Sleeping under canvas (which always makes your trip feel that little bit more adventurous for little ones), but with all the comforts you might need. After a restful night’s sleep, you can step out onto your veranda and take in the neverending valley views before enjoying a tasty breakfast on the dining deck.
In terms of shared areas, there’s a central mess tent where you’ll find the main dining room plus a comfortable sitting area where you can cosy up in the chill of the Laikipian evening playing board games or reading together. If you’d prefer to spend the evening outside, gather on the deck and recount safari adventures together. Be sure to look up at the sky, with such little light pollution the sky comes alive with glittering stars each night. One particularly thoughtful touch, is the swinging bench that’s set on a rock above the camp. With a panoramic view over the dramatic landscape, this tranquil spot is the perfect place to soak up the impressive natural beauty of Laikipia.

What Really Matters to Young Children on a Kenya Safari

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came.
