Location
South Africa has several outstanding malaria-free wildlife reserves. Madikwe is the largest and its climactic landscape of volcanic hills, expansive plains and winding rivers is a breathtaking backdrop for the private lodges within.

Madikwe Game Reserve is situated about four hours north-west of Johannesburg, bordering Botswana and occupies an interesting transition between the Lowveld and Kalahari thornveld. The setting is one of open grassy plains and rivers with riverine forest, other woodland and hill country.

Within the reserve, massive granite inselbergs give Madikwe its unique scenic character while to the south are the spectacular ranges of the Dwarsberg Mountains.

Exclusive Use Safari Villas
A haven of space and bush luxury, all three of the villas are perfect for groups and families of varying sizes. The Owner’s House is intimate, accepting just four guests, but can combined with River House for extended capacity.

River House will comfortably house six adults and four children, while Farm House takes up to 10 guests of any age, making it ideal for a malaria-free multi-generational family safari. The suites are presidential in size and style and the lodges feature open floor plans and chic decor.

You can enjoy delicious meals al fresco or indoors and there are plenty of comfortable nooks to relax or play games in between safaris.

Private Big Five Game Viewing in Madikwe
Staying at Morukuru gives you a private guide and vehicle to explore malaria-free Madikwe at your own leisure. So whether you’d like to enjoy a lazy morning and head out for an hour or so before lunch, or quite the opposite to focus on specific wildlife sightings, you can do so without the inhibition of other guests.

Owing to its location on the transition zone, Madikwe has a particularly wide range of wildlife including sixty-six mammal species and the second largest population of elephant in South Africa.
On game drives, your guide will take you in search of not just the Big Five, but the ‘Magnificent Seven’. The usual suspects — elephant, rhino (both black and white), buffalo, lion and leopard — are joined by thriving populations of cheetah and the endangered painted dog, which are seen by an estimated half of all visitors. You'll also encounter a wide variety of plains game, including antelope, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe.

There are many fascinating smaller creatures such as families of baboon, warthog, jackal and, as you go further north and the scenery becomes drier some desert adapted species such as the bat-eared fox. Madikwe is also excellent for birding and around 350 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve.

If you visit from June to October during the southern right whale migration, you may even be able to watch from the cliffs as these gentle giants breach the waves.
