Location
Set between a lush nature reserve and the five-mile-long beach of Playa Guiones, Sendero is on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. With excellent surf on its doorstep, thanks to Pacific swells and a fortunate coastal configuration, there's no surprise to find that the local town of Nosaros has a laid-back and youthful vibe, which includes the older residents. In such an idyllic place, perhaps its no wonder that this is one of only five designated ‘blue zones’ on the planet, where people are said to live longer and healthier than anywhere else.
Accommodation
There are 25 rooms and suites, plus seven family-sized villas with private pools, at Sendero. Whatever you opt for, from a three-bedroom villa to a ‘only what you need’ queen room, you’ll find it to be immaculate in terms of comfort and style. Fresh, airy, and with an effortless combination of sophistication and relaxed cool, this place seems to define the word vitality. You can’t go far wrong with a Jungle Room, which comes with a daybed-equipped balcony with an outdoor shower that may elicit some curiosity from passing rainforest creatures. Sendero means ‘short path’, which is all you need to take to discover the world-class surf beach, but before you get there, you’ll find plenty of delights in the communal areas and within the 11 acres of lush grounds.
There’s a saltwater courtyard pool that’s the epitome of jungle-chic, extensive yoga facilities, a range of relaxed yet superb dining options, a resident coffee van, and the kind of bar that invites après-surf story-swapping. Everywhere you go, there are honey-coloured floors, bright white walls with stunning art, and lush tropical foliage.

- Go for a bike ride in the local area to see if you can find the secret to the locals’ longevity. Perhaps it is the coconut waters, the passionfruit juice, or the guanabana. Whatever it is, the elderly here have a spring in their step.
