Location

Sosian Lodge is a working ranch located on Sosian Wildlife Reserve, a beautiful private reserve in the Laikipia region of central Kenya. Laikipia is a great plateau at around 6,000ft above sea level and the 24,000 acres of open grassy plains, forest, hilly escarpments and beautiful rivers are within sight of the towering Mount Kenya.

Family Safari Cottages
The family cottages at Sosian invite you to spread out and make yourselves comfortable. You will have two interconnecting bedrooms, each with en suite bathrooms, providing everyone with plenty of space and privacy. The accommodation here is based around the original 1940s colonial style ranch house, where you can enjoy delicious meals in their spacious dining room, play a game of snooker in the billiard room and relax in the lounge and library.
Outside there are attractive grounds and a large pool where you can relax and enjoy the fine views extending over 20 miles. The lodge has tennis courts too, for family members who still have energy to burn and a wonderful spa for those who want to unwind after a busy day of exploring. The food is all organically home grown, including the meat, which is sourced from Sosian’s ranch. In house chefs prepare meals that will suit all taste buds, ranging from three-course fine dining to BBQs and picnics in the bush.

Adventure for All

Set on a huge private conservancy, there are no limits to the activities you can enjoy. Game drives can be taken at any time of day; early mornings and after dusk are when animals are most active, while a midday drive might reveal elephant herds playing in a waterhole. You, too, might choose to take to the waters to cool off. Kayaking, rock jumps and tubing down the river are all options. Your guides will take you out on foot, teaching you to identify tracks and poo. This is an excellent time to keep a record of the birds and see who can spot the most species—there are over 350 to find!

Riding Safaris And Ranch Life

Riding enthusiasts will love swapping the 4x4s for a more traditional mode of transport: horses and camels. With a herd of 26 horses, there are mounts for riders of all abilities, including ponies for small children. A reasonable amount of riding experience is needed to ride in the bush, but even the youngest riders can go for a trot near the lodge. Camels offer an even higher vantage point, so choose them for a unique perspective across the plains. There are also opportunities to join the ranch manager for a morning, learning about how Sosian’s cattle farming is a sustainable way of managing the land.

Conservation
Conservation
With large numbers of elephant residing in the Sosian Conservancy and greater area, Sosian Lodge believes they have a huge responsibility to protect these endangered animals from poachers. Their most effective strategy is boots on the ground in the form of well-trained rangers. The equipment, communication systems and level of training required for them to do their job safely and effectively is an ongoing commitment that Sosian have made to their elephant populations.
Environment
Environment
Sosian Lodge has made considerable efforts to minimise their carbon footprint. Not only do they recycle all glass and plastics used at the camp, they also provide guests with reusable bottles to prevent the need for multiple single-use bottles. They are also self-sufficient in most of their fresh produce including eggs, milk and cream. Anything they do not rear on site they buy locally to help support local communities and reduce air miles.
Community
Community
Sosian operates a program supporting a local school where 330 children attend daily. While school fees are subsidised, the numerous extras such as books, stationary, desks, sports equipment and even basic sanitation are not covered. Many of the parents are subsistence farmers living in a harsh environment aiming to provide enough money to simply feed their families from day to day. Sosian contributes heavily to the building of new classrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, desks, playground equipment as well as providing teacher salaries and offering scholarships for secondary education.

What Really Matters to Young Children on a Kenya Safari

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!
