Why the Drakensberg Mountains?
To the north, the Drakensberg Mountains border Kruger National Park, making it easy to pair a mountain experience with a Kruger safari. Hike through the oft-photographed Blyde River Canyon – a magnificent nature preserve ideal for birdwatching. See cape vultures and black eagles soar, or watch Gurney’s sugarbirds and malachite sunbirds at higher elevations.

To the south, you’ll see how names like Giant’s Castle and Cathedral Peak illustrate the natural architecture of the Drakensberg Mountains. Hire a car or stay at a country house hotel for easy access to hiking and cycling trails. Horse riding and fishing experiences are also possible. The Drakensberg Mountains are ideal for pairing outdoor adventure with a safari or KwaZulu Natal cultural tour. This is one of South Africa’s most scenic regions – a bold claim in a country with such beauty in every direction.
