Eco-Luxury Cloud Forest Cabins in Monteverde
A reimagining of the ageing El Sapo Dorado property, Hotel Senda Monteverde was created by local owners in collaboration with the Cayuga Collection, known for sustainable luxury across Central America. Their goal was a contemporary eco‑lodge that married comfort with deep environmental responsibility; a place where Cayuga’s belief that luxury and sustainability can coexist is lived rather than stated.

Conceived as a retreat of quiet immersion in the cloud forest, Senda offers a pause between Costa Rica’s more adrenaline‑driven regions. It sits just minutes from the main cloud forest reserve and connects via a hanging bridge to another protected area, placing protected forest quite literally on the doorstep. Its cabins are scattered across grounds wrapped in native trees, forming part of the cloud‑forest ecosystem itself.

Location
Set high in the Tilarán Mountains of Costa Rica’s northwest highlands, Hotel Senda Monteverde sits within the cool, mist‑laden cloud forest that defines this region. It’s around 2½ hours from San José, with Santa Elena – gateway to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve – just a fifteen-minute walk below.

Monteverde’s extraordinary biodiversity surrounds the lodge: more than 2,500 plant species, 400 birds, and 100 mammals thrive in this unique ecosystem. With the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve close by and the Aguti Wildlife Reserve linked via a hanging bridge, Senda offers tranquillity with world‑class wildlife observation exceptionally close at hand.

Accommodation
Arriving at Hotel Senda Monteverde through the swirling mists of the cloud forest sets the tone for a stay defined by tranquillity and immersion in nature. The lodge feels intimate and personal, with 24 rooms and suites arranged in bungalow‑style dwellings across almost 50 hectares of native forest.

Interiors are contemporary and warm, with plenty of wood, soft colours and large windows that frame the surrounding greenery. Private terraces bring the cloud forest even closer; coatis and agoutis often wander past, and west‑facing suites offer superb sunset views from the Tilarán highlands.
Stone pathways lead through the gardens to El Sapo Restaurant and Bar, where views stretch across the plateau below. The culinary approach is rooted in sustainability: ingredients are sourced locally and often from the lodge’s own market garden, with dressings and sauces made fresh each day.

Communal spaces are designed for quiet downtime between cloud‑forest adventures. The hillside pool and hot tubs provide a warm refuge in the cool mountain air, while the Yoga Studio – an open, wrap‑around space – hosts early‑morning classes, wildlife talks at dusk and small group gatherings.

Senda’s grounds continue to evolve through active reforestation, with more than 5,000 native plants added. A close partnership with the Aguti Wildlife Reserve and involvement in the Monteverde Forest Clean Up reflect the lodge’s commitment to its environment and community.

Conservation
Conservation
Hotel Senda Monteverde has restored its grounds by planting more than 5,500 native trees and plants, bringing life back to previously degraded land. Guests receive complimentary access to the Aguti Wildlife Reserve, whose entrance fees Senda covers to help conserve this rare parcel of cloud forest and protect its biodiversity year‑round.
Environment
Environment
Environmental stewardship shapes daily operations. Staff volunteer for local clean‑ups, and future plans include a community waste‑management education campaign. The hotel avoids plastic water bottles and single‑use straws, using reusable bottles and locally made bamboo straws instead. Solar panels heat guest‑room water, and all produce is organic, hormone‑free, grass‑fed or responsibly sourced, supporting sustainable farmers and fishermen.
Community
Community
Senda’s commitment to Monteverde begins with local employment: the entire team is Costa Rican, most from within walking distance of the lodge. The hotel sources food, drinks, art and amenities from nearby producers, supports a local women’s cooperative, and provides year‑round, above‑average salaries. As part of the Cayuga Collection, it contributes to award‑winning community uplift.
