Island Perfection in Panama
With wildlife as abundant as anywhere in Latin America and a wealth of excursions on offer, this is the kind of place that could easily anchor an entire journey. Equally, it makes a sublime finale to intrepid adventures in the forests of Panama or neighbouring Costa Rica. With no other development on the island, and nights spent listening to water lapping beneath your villa, it feels special, romantic and wonderfully apart from the world.

Location

Nayara Bocas del Toro sits on the north‑central coast of Panama, as the sole occupant of Frangipani Island in the lush Bocas del Toro archipelago. It’s reached via a short flight from Panama City to Bocas Town, a laid‑back surfer hub of waterside bars, small shops and a lively, bohemian atmosphere. From there, a water taxi carries guests across mangrove‑lined waters to the resort’s private island. Don’t be surprised to see dolphins playing in the wake.

Surrounded by rainforest, coral‑rich shallows and wildlife ranging from sloths to vibrant poison-dart frogs, it offers access to the region’s famed snorkelling, diving, and even surfing.

Accommodation

If you thought that Bali had the monopoly on paradise, or even its own architecture, it’s time to discover more than a taste of an Indonesian-style utopia in Panama. The 16 overwater villas and two elevated treehouses hover above turquoise water or rise from the forest canopy, all connected by raised, decked boardwalks that wind through mangroves and tropical gardens.

The overwater villas take inspiration from Balinese design, complete with the elegant Tumpang Sari canopy above the four‑poster bed. Interiors blend warm hardwoods, handcrafted textures and soft coastal tones, while glass floor panels offer mesmerising views of the marine world below – perhaps even a turtle gliding past your feet. Most villas feature private plunge pools, and some add firepits for evenings under the stars.
The treehouses, perched fifty feet above the ground, are imaginative architectural feats crafted from locally harvested bamboo and reclaimed hardwoods lifted from the bottom of the Panama Canal. Their fusion of Balinese and Panamanian aesthetics creates a serene, elevated retreat with sweeping views over the forest, mangroves and ocean. Each features a deep, hammered‑copper Javanese bathtub, perfect for soaking in the treetops.

Dining centres on the Elephant House, a century‑old Indonesian structure reassembled on the island, where organic, locally sourced dishes – ingredients often straight from the sea – are served in an atmospheric, open‑air setting. For relaxed breakfasts and lunches, the Coral Café by the pool offers lighter fare. Follow the boardwalk through the mangroves and you’ll reach the resort’s aerial beach on stilts, with steps leading directly into the water for paddleboarding, kayaking or snorkelling.

Experiences

  • Set out on a private boat tour with a naturalist, watching dolphins, hopping between islands, snorkelling pristine reefs and even sipping champagne on the way home as you explore the archipelago.
  • Join an Indigenous chocolate tour in a Ngöbe village, tasting fresh cacao, learning each step of the process and sharing a traditional lunch with the community.
  • Visit Monkey Island, meeting rescued monkeys who now live safely in a sanctuary and are accustomed to gentle human interaction.
  • Venture to the Bat Cave on Bastimentos, gliding through mangroves, spotting sloths and red frogs, then walking with a local guide to explore its stalactite‑lined chambers.
  • Ride an e‑bike to Bluff Beach or La Gruta, following quiet coastal roads to golden sands or a small bat‑filled cavern hidden in the forest.
  • Take an ATV across Isla Colón, following Flying Pirates’ rugged trails to remote spots like La Piscina and the Blue Lagoon, where warm, calm water awaits.
  • Paddleboard, kayak or snorkel straight from the aerial beach, descending steps directly into turquoise water alive with marine life. You can even take a boat trip to the ocean breakers for excellent surfing.
