Sarara Treehouses

There’s nothing quite like a treehouse, a secret vantage point perched in a leafy canopy, to rekindle the excitement of your youthful past. How many treehouses, however, come with such a gorgeous swimming pool and amazing safari, conservation and community experiences close by? Location

Look at a satellite image of northern Kenya, and you’ll see it’s dominated by hues of golden brown. In some places, however, islands of greenery poke through the sea of semi-aridity. They’re the high-ground sky-islands; tectonically thrust gifts where clouds gather and rainfall allows life to flourish. To the north of Mount Kenya, one such area is the Matthews Range, also known as the Lenkiyio Hills, a place of lush vegetation where the Sarara Treehouses perch.

The surrounding lands form the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, a community-led sanctuary of almost 3,500 square kilometres. The semi-nomadic Samburu people who call this place their home are responsible for the name Namunyak, which means ‘Where the hills hug the clouds’.

The other Sarara properties within the Namunyak Conservancy are Sarara Reteti House and Sarara Camp.

Accommodation

Imagine what you would do to build a treehouse of your dreams: you would forage the landscape for useful and interesting materials and fashion them into platforms around the branches and trunks of the oldest and sturdiest trees. That’s exactly what they’ve done here, using what nature has provided in terms of sustainable local materials and a setting within an ancient canopy.

On those rustic platforms, ecologically impermanent and suitably bush-luxury intrepid, are eight tented rooms plus a family room suitable for a group of four. They may have indoor toilets, but the solar-heated showers are outside and in sight of the occasional passing guereza colobus monkey. Lounge on a sofa on your tent’s deck, and you’ll enjoy birds flitting through the canopy and glimpses through to the lowlands beyond.
This hideaway on the flank of Warges Peak is a small, exclusive and elevated community that comes with some significant perks. The open-sided main lodge, under its lofted thatched roof, benefits from the breezes and the shade, making it cool in more sense than one when you lounge in its plentiful deep sofas. Dining here, enjoying regional produce and dishes made with Samburu flair, is certainly enhanced by the sensations of the setting.

Then there’s the swimming pool. It’s the icing on a very delicious, tiered cake: a rim-full hillside terrace with a view to the craggy peaks above the verdant slopes. Put your elbows on the edge, admire, and then look downhill. You’ll see something special: a permanent waterhole frequented by elephants and many of the other inhabitants of this special place.

Experiences

  • Daily safari adventures await. Even though elephants were once hunted to near extinction here, the reserve now has the second-largest population in Kenya. There are also almost 500 reticulated giraffes and a good population of the critically endangered Grévy’s zebra.
  • A short journey away is the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, a community-owned conservation initiative that is inspirational and educational in equal measure. Connect with the keepers and with their delightful, orphaned charges.
  • Discover the good works of the Sarara Foundation, such as the nomadic Montessori schools and the Milk to Market programme.
  • Cultural visits, such as to the Manyatta homestead, are unforgettable. You can learn from traditional artisans like the blacksmiths and enjoy having a go at beadwork. Perhaps your day will finish with Ngoma dancing.
  • Take a walk with a Samburu resident of these hills. You’ll explore ravines with centuries-old cycads, venture up rugged outcrops and perhaps enjoy the thrill of a natural rock slide.
  • Experience the fascinating cultural routine of the semi-nomadic herders as they tend their cattle in the ‘Singing Wells’ ritual.
  • Ways to have safari adventures here include vehicle, foot, horseback and even helicopter. Perhaps ask to be dropped off on Mount Orka for some fly camping.

Environment
Environment
Sarara’s Treehouses are completely off the grid and maintain 24-hour power through solar panels and state-of-the-art Tesla power walls. All camp water comes from a mountain spring and is UV filtered. The treehouses were built using sustainable natural materials from the surrounding area.
Community
Community
Fresh produce for meals comes from small-scale farmers in Kenya, supporting the local economy while limiting food miles. The honey, for example, is sourced from the Samburu honey gatherers who live in the Matthews Range. The Sarara Foundation is a community partnership that facilitates a wide range of educational and healthcare initiatives.
Conservation
Conservation
The Sarara Foundation works hand-in-hand with the Namunyak Conservancy and the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. From habitat restoration to wildlife monitoring, the management of the release of orphaned elephants, and the necessary community empowerment to allow conservation to thrive, Sarara is integral to this whole area.

What Really Matters to Young Children on a Kenya Safari

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!
