Six Senses Thimphu
Set high above the capital in Motithang, the lodge was designed by Habita Architects, who worked within Bhutan’s heritage regulations to use rammed earth, stone and timber, drawing on dzong‑inspired rooflines and traditional craftsmanship. Known as the ‘Palace in the Sky’, it serves as the contemplative starting point for the Six Sense’s Khamsa Journey, a modern reinterpretation of a royal pilgrimage. Since opening, it has helped shape Bhutan’s low‑impact luxury landscape.
Location
A short uphill climb leads to Talakha Tashi Drukgyel Monastery, its prayer flags catching the mountain wind. The setting feels both elevated and connected: close enough to the capital for easy access, yet wrapped in greenery and long views that give the ridge a sense of calm.
Accommodation
Communal spaces echo this harmony: private oversized decks, serene lounges, and courtyards designed for stillness and reflection. The villas offer generous indoor–outdoor living, some with courtyards ideal for meditative solitude or quiet gatherings with soulmates.
It feels only natural to discover that the spa is superb. Its indoor pool, fitness centre, herbal garden, alchemy room, yoga studio, hot‑stone bath, sauna, and generous collection of treatment rooms create a sanctuary shaped for unhurried restoration. Whether you’re drawn to Bhutanese healing rituals, holistic therapies, or simply the pleasure of drifting into your own quiet rhythm, the space invites a deep exhale.
Experiences
- Take a tour of the 50-metre-high golden Dordenma Buddha on the opposite flank of the valley. When you step inside, you’ll discover a further 125,000 smaller buddhas.
- Enjoy some Bhutanese traditions with afternoon tea and archery. You’ll go on a leisurely walk through the orchards to the lodge’s apple shed, where you’ll sip infusions before learning the art of arrows.
- Discover what your future might hold when you visit Pangri Zmapa Lhakhang monastery. You’ll have an astrology reading with a monk and learn your new Buddhist name.
- Later in the day, Nimnub Point is the place to head for delicious snacks and a tipple or two as the sun descends and the light turns golden.
- Enjoy the caves at Tango Monastery, where Buddhist saints meditated from the 12th century onwards. The 16th-century complex that has since sprung up, along with the hilltop-perching Cheri Monastery house beautiful artworks and the wheel of life.
- Amid fluttering prayer flags and ancient pine trees, enjoy the sweeping views over the Thimphu Valley from the Lungsigang viewpoint. It’s only a short walk on the ‘lodge loop’ trail.
- Start to develop good habits by taking advantage of the morning mindfulness sessions with a lama in the lodge’s dedicated prayer pavilion.
