Heritage in Kolkata
Alipore – one of Kolkata’s earliest and most distinguished neighbourhoods – grew directly from that riverside prosperity, and the river’s influence is still felt in its broad avenues, historic institutions and long‑established residential enclaves.
Here, the Hooghly is never far away. The ghats (riverside steps), bridges and promenades that shaped Kolkata’s rise remain central to its identity, and several lie within easy reach of Taj Bengal. Princep Ghat, a short walk away, blends historic architecture, evening walkers and sweeping views of Vidyasagar Setu bridge. Smaller neighbourhood ghats offer intimate glimpses of daily life, where residents bathe, pray, launch ferries and mark rituals at the water’s edge.
Afloat on the Brahmaputra
Its moods define life along the banks: calm one moment, thunderous the next, always commanding respect. Flowing onward into Bangladesh, it merges with the Ganges to form the world’s largest delta before finally reaching the Bay of Bengal.
