Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai

A legendary landmark on Mumbai’s harbourfront, the Taj Mahal Palace blends century-old grandeur with modern luxury. It’s an icon of Colaba overlooking the Gateway of India, with celebrated restaurants, historic architecture and a guest list that reads like a Who’s Who. A Landmark with a Front Row Seat on Indian History
From the early twentieth century onwards, anyone arriving by boat into Mumbai (then Bombay) would have been struck by the sheer presence of one of the world’s grandest buildings: the Taj Mahal Palace. Encouraged by the editor of The Times of India to create a hotel worthy of a great global city, the industrialist Jamsetji N. Tata built exactly that for the Bombay he loved. It quickly became the place where British Viceroys rubbed shoulders with Maharajahs and anyone who mattered.

Today it remains an icon of Mumbai; still India’s largest and most prosperous city, shaped by its role as a trading gateway to the Arabian Sea and therefore the world.

Location

Known locally simply as ‘The Taj’, the Taj Mahal Palace occupies one of Mumbai’s most storied positions: the harbourfront of Colaba, where it first opened in 1903. It stands directly opposite the Gateway of India – the grand archway commemorating King George V’s 1911 landing and, both poignantly and upliftingly for India, the point from which British troops departed in 1948. Anyone heading out by boat past Sunk Rock Lighthouse soon finds themselves in the Arabian Sea.

Today it remains one of Mumbai’s great gathering places, alive with locals, travellers and the hotel’s 1,500 staff. And don’t confuse it with the Taj Mahal in Agra; that’s nearly 1,000 kilometres away.

Accommodation

Like an ornate cliff face crowned by its famous Florentine red dome, the Taj Mahal Palace rises over Mumbai’s historic harbour with unmistakable grandeur. Its scale is immediately apparent: more than 300 rooms and suites fill the original Palace wing, each shaped by a century of hosting the world’s elite.

Next door, the mid‑century modern Tower adds another couple of hundred rooms behind its rhythmic arched balconies; a striking architectural counterpoint that only deepens the hotel’s iconic status. In fact, the Taj Mahal Palace was the first building in India to secure intellectual property rights for its appearance, beating even the Taj Mahal in Agra to that honour.
Arrival is a performance in itself. Elegant doormen in silk kurtas greet you with a ritual polished over generations. The lobby floor has been trodden by Barack Obama, George Bernard Shaw, the Dalai Lama and Lord Mountbatten – and, in disguise, George Harrison, who slipped in for sitar lessons with Ravi Shankar. Their friendship is commemorated in a suite dedicated to the two musical legends.

With a hotel of this scale, describing every room is impossible, but dreamers will gravitate to the signature suites: the Bell Tower tucked beneath a dome; the TATA Suite honouring the founder; and the Maratha and Lotus Suites, tributes to the warrior dynasty and India’s national flower. Even if you’re staying in the Tower, wander over to the Palace wing to admire the grand stairwell with its wrought‑iron balustrades and sky‑blue cupola, then ride the vintage elevator to view it from above – and peek into the vast ballroom while you’re there.

Outside, the Taj’s pool is widely considered the best in Mumbai, and the hotel’s shopping arcades offer everything from Louis Vuitton to the city’s largest English‑language bookshop and the Raj‑era institution Burlington’s.

Experiences

  • Walk to the Gateway of India and sail to Elephanta Caves. The hotel sits directly opposite Mumbai’s most famous archway, where boats depart for the UNESCO‑listed cave temples.
  • Book The Chef’s Studio; an exclusive, specially curated private dining experience where the hotel’s culinary team designs a bespoke menu just for you.
  • Join the daily heritage walk; a guided storytelling tour through the hotel’s corridors, revealing the legends, personalities and moments that made this palace an icon.
  • Follow a curated route through South Mumbai, taking in the city’s architectural jewels: the Art Deco sweep of Marine Drive, the Gothic Revival cluster around CST, and the leafy heritage avenues of Fort and Colaba.
  • Head out on the water during yachting season. From sunrise cruises to speedboat rides, the hotel’s sailing and cruising portfolio offers world‑class ways to experience Mumbai Harbour.
  • Explore the Taj Art Gallery. Once one of India’s most important artistic spaces, where masters like S.H. Raza, V.S. Gaitonde and Jehangir Sabavala exhibited; today it remains a cultural anchor within the hotel.
  • Take the Royal E‑Victoria Ride. Glide through Apollo Bunder in an electric carriage inspired by Mumbai’s historic Victorias, a charming way to explore the neighbourhood.

Why We Include Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, in our Journeys
Mumbai is one of the world’s great cities, and to understand it properly you need to stay at its historic heart – the districts of Fort and Colaba. Here lie CST’s Gothic Revival splendour, the 19th‑century grandeur of the High Court and Rajabai Clock Tower, the galleries of Kala Ghoda and the colonnades of Horniman Circle. Colaba adds the Gateway of India – and, beside it, the Taj Mahal Palace. With seven restaurants, the city’s first licensed bar and original coffee shop, and a legacy woven into Mumbai’s story, it’s simply the place to stay.
