A Prime Position in India’s Most Historic Port
A boatyard without direct access to the sea would be inconceivable – and Brunton Boatyard’s enviable harbourfront position is precisely what the hotel inherited when the old shipyard fell into disrepair. In the 1990s, the building was revived; its huge corridors, high ceilings and generous passageways retained as defining features of the original structure.

Designed by the CGH Earth group to echo Fort Cochin’s trading history, the property brilliantly channels 19th‑century Malabar style, fusing Dutch, Portuguese and English architectural influences and housing authentic period antiques throughout.

Location
Brunton Boatyard stands on the site of George Brunton & Sons’ Victorian boatyard, overlooking the harbour where the Arabian Sea meets the mouth of the Periyar River in the Indian state of Kerala. Its position in Fort Cochin – the oldest European settlement in India – places you at the centre of a centuries‑old trading crossroads shaped by Portuguese, Dutch and British rule, layered over even older exchanges between Keralans and the Arabic and Hebrew worlds.

Mattancherry Palace and the spice‑laden lanes of Jew Town sit close by, while the romance of the Chinese fishing nets is only a short stroll away. Cochin’s colourful history is everywhere here; even Salman Rushdie opened The Moor’s Last Sigh in these streets.

Accommodation

If George Brunton could be transported through time to see what had become of his bustling boatyard, he would be amazed and delighted. He’d soon adjust, no doubt, and find himself relaxing by the pool, watching fishermen and cargo boats slip past on the same stretch of harbour his boatbuilders once worked beside.

All 26 rooms face the sea, each air‑conditioned and furnished in heavy teak with antique four‑poster beds, terracotta tiles and whitewashed walls. The modern ensuite bathrooms also overlook the water, offering the rare pleasure of watching ships, fishing boats or even dolphins while going about your morning routine.
The best views are from the second floor, and the four deluxe suites add separate living rooms and generous terraces.

Communal areas carry the hotel’s heritage character: high ceilings, tiled floors, period furniture and traditional punkah fans gently stirring the air. Outside, the deckchair‑lined pool looks directly onto the harbour, complete with a stone dolphin statue; a charming touch when dolphins appear in the river.

Dining reflects Cochin’s history and setting. History restaurant serves Portuguese, Dutch, British Raj, Arabic, Kosher and Keralan dishes made with local ingredients, while the Terrace Grill offers open‑air seafood by the water. The Armoury provides snacks and light meals in a relaxed, club‑like setting.

Experiences

  • Cruise Cochin Harbour from the private jetty, gliding past working fishermen, enormous cargo ships and, with luck, a playful dolphin or two as the sun sets over the Arabian Sea.
  • Stroll to the iconic Chinese fishing nets, watching vendors haul in the day’s catch and cook it to order; a living tradition dating back to the court of Kublai Khan.
  • Explore Fort Cochin’s landmark churches, including Santa Cruz Basilica and St Francis, the oldest European church in India and the first resting place of Vasco da Gama.
  • Visit Mattancherry Palace, the Dutch‑era residence famed for its vivid Kerala murals and portraits of the Rajas of Cochin.
  • Cycle through historic Fort Cochin, using the hotel’s complimentary bicycles to roam beaches, spice markets, old warehouses and hidden backstreets at your own pace.
  • Wander Jew Town’s atmospheric lanes, lined with antique shops, old Jewish homes and the four‑century‑old synagogue that anchors this multicultural quarter.
  • Breathe in the spice‑laden air of Mattancherry, where ginger, cardamom, turmeric and cloves fill the bustling old market – the heart of Cochin’s centuries‑old trade.

Conservation
Conservation
The philosophy of Brunton Boatyard’s parent company (CGH Earth) centres on preserving local heritage and natural ecosystems. At Brunton Boatyard, this includes restoring the site’s historic shipyard architecture, protecting Cochin’s waterfront character, and supporting responsible tourism practices that safeguard the cultural and ecological assets of Fort Cochin.
Community
Community
The hotel operates with a strong local ethos: employing and training people from nearby neighbourhoods, sourcing ingredients and crafts from regional producers, and ensuring tourism revenue circulates within the community. CGH Earth’s model emphasises cultural respect, local partnerships and meaningful engagement with Fort Cochin’s residents
Environment
Environment
Brunton Boatyard follows CGH Earth’s rigorous environmental standards, reducing resource use through solar photovoltaics on the roof, efficient operations and responsible sourcing. The hotel bottles and treats harvested rainwater, eliminating around 15,000 plastic bottles each year.
