The Galápagos: Should You Stay Ashore?
For many travellers, the Galápagos and cruising go hand in hand. But a yacht isn't the only way to experience these remarkable islands. A land stay reveals a different side of the archipelago – one that offers greater flexibility, more time to settle into island life and, in many cases, a more comfortable way to travel.

It's an approach that works particularly well for families, multigenerational groups and anyone who would rather return each evening to the space and comfort of an exceptional lodge. With properties like Pikaia Lodge and Montemar Eco Luxury Villas, you can still enjoy extraordinary wildlife encounters and expertly guided excursions by yacht each day, before returning to your own room, suite or villa at night.

Nor does it have to be one or the other. Combining a land stay with a liveaboard cruise gives you the opportunity to experience the Galápagos from two very different perspectives, often creating the most rewarding journey of all.

Below, we'll explore why a land-based stay has become one of our favourite ways to experience the Galápagos. If you're still deciding which approach is right for you, our guide to How to Experience the Galápagos: Cruise, Land Stay or Both? compares every option, helping you choose the style of journey that best suits the way you like to travel.

Why Stay on Land in the Galápagos?

Two Superb Galápagos Lodges

Pikaia Lodge

Location: Perched on a crater rim amid a reforested reserve in the highlands of Santa Cruz.

What We Love: Pikaia Lodge excels in its setting and its comforts. Guests wake to dramatic views over Santa Cruz and distant Santa Fe, wander more than three kilometres of giant-tortoise‑rich private trails, and unwind with spa, sauna and a crater‑side infinity pool. The Homo Sapiens Explorers’ Lounge – a place for naturalist talks, book-reading and 3D documentaries – is a wonderful hub for deep learning.

Rooms are spacious with luxurious bathrooms, dining is Relais & Châteaux‑level, and the lodge’s private 145‑foot yacht – plus additional vessels – opens the door to superb day trips to other islands.

Montemar Eco Villas

Location: A 17-hectare sustainable farm on a giant tortoise corridor in the Santa Cruz highlands

What We Love: Montemar Eco Villas offers one of the most private and characterful stays in the Galápagos. With just two hand‑built villas, it feels intimate and secluded and is superb for families or groups. Many guests book both villas for exclusive use, creating a relaxed, multigenerational retreat shaped entirely around their own rhythm.

Tortoises wander through the grounds as near‑constant companions, adding a sense of quiet wonder to daily life. The property also has its own small coffee plantation, where you can learn how beans are grown, harvested and roasted – a fitting detail in a place where sustainability and local connection run deep. The owners, both naturalists, bring an inspiring vision and a hands‑on approach that helps guests get the very best out of Santa Cruz.

Galápagos Safari Camp

Location: A private estate in the highlands of Santa Cruz overlooking the remote northern slopes of the island.

What We Love: Galápagos Safari Camp has a wonderfully romantic origin story: the founders bought the highland estate on a whim after climbing a tree and falling for its views. The camp captures the feel of a true safari outpost, making it ideal for travellers seeking an authentic, land‑based experience of Galápagos nature.

Its canvas‑and‑timber luxury is perfectly judged, comfortable yet low‑impact, with even the plunge pool sized for water conservation. There’s an intrepid, expedition‑like spirit, amplified by the vista that sparked that initial impulsive decision. From here, despite the seclusion, you’re close to Los Gemelos, the lava tunnels, the El Chato tortoise reserve, and within easy reach of Puerto Ayora for day trips to other islands.

Beyond the Island: Galápagos, the Journeysmiths Way

Anyone who comes to us seeking a one‑of‑a‑kind experience of this extraordinary archipelago sets our minds working on the right combination for them. That might mean an immersive island stay on its own, or pairing time ashore with a boat journey to reach more remote islands. For some travellers, a land‑stay in the Galápagos is the perfect transition from a wider Latin American journey; perhaps after Peru or mainland Ecuador.

Whatever your needs in pace, variety, wildlife priorities, style of accommodation or timescale, we apply decades of expertise and logistical finesse to ensure your journey doesn’t just tick boxes – it redefines them.

Families and the Galápagos

We’re a family company, and we believe deeply in the power of travel to shape young minds and create shared memories across generations. Although the Galápagos has often been seen as a destination for adults – perhaps later in life – staying in a spacious, flexible lodge makes the islands superb for all ages.

With fun, relaxed family meals and everyone enjoying their own space, parents and grandparents can savour the experience just as much as the children expanding their horizons. And stepping where Charles Darwin once walked is transformative at any age.
