Africa’s largest game reserve that’s surprising under the radar

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park (previously Selous) may be the largest wildlife reserve in Africa – and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site – but it’s surprisingly little visited. This is a marvellous destination for a private safari. Why Nyerere National Park?
No surprise that this expansive park features a variety of landscapes. You’ll find forests, mountains, plains and the Rhuha and Rufiji Rivers – but despite its 50,000 square kilometres, Nyerere receives considerably fewer visitors than the Serengeti. It’s one of our favourites for an exclusive safari, especially in combination with a luxury lodge or through a fly camping experience.

A walking safari in Nyerere is a must. There’s no better way to connect with nature and gain a whole new perspective than to move through the landscape with your own two feet. Boating safaris are also possible here thanks to crisscrossing channels of water – spot crocodile and hippo along with fabulous birds and unbothered plains game like elephant, eland, wildebeest and kudu sidling up for a drink.
  • Vast, remote wilderness.
  • Far fewer guests than other game reserves.
  • Luxury lodges and flycamping.
  • Walking and boating safaris.
  • World-class birdwatching.
  • Memorable wildlife including African wild dogs and black rhino.
