Honey Bear Bush Camp

Honey Bear Bush Camp is a traditional camp offering a classic safari experience. It’s entirely unique, though, in that you can track chimps here too. This waterside camp is also the only one in the entirety of the Kyambura Game Reserve, so we really do mean it when we say you’ll have the wilderness all to yourselves! Location

You’ll find Honey Bear Bush Camp on the south bank of the Kazinga Channel in the Kyambura Game Reserve. This particular spot is known as Uganda’s most famous ‘wildlife highway’ with huge numbers of elephant and hippo seen frequently (over 100 of the latter isn’t unusual!). There’s also great birding in the nearby swamps, where you can see an abundance of water birds. Hop on a boat and the chimps of Kyambura Gorge are just a short ride away, making this one of the only places in the world where you can see predators, elephant, hippo, plains game, and chimpanzee. Colobus and red-tailed monkey, plus olive baboon can also be seen here, so it’s a great place to be if you’re interested in primates.

Being in a private game reserve gives you the opportunity to try more diverse activities including walks and night drives. Staying at the only camp in the reserve means it’s just you and the wildlife, with zero chance of interruption from other tourists - the ultimate escape.

Accommodation

There are five tents, each carefully positioned to maximise your views of the Kazinga channel and the impressive Rwenzori Mountains. When you unzip your tent each morning, you’re greeted with a calming, peaceful natural vista, the perfect accompaniment to your morning coffee.

Inside, you’ll find large, comfortable beds and a writing desk where you can document your day’s adventures. Delicate lanterns throughout provide soft lighting and help to create a tranquil ambience.
You’ll have an en-suite bathroom with a sink, flushing toilet and an outside bucket shower. This is a traditional set up, without airs and graces, where you’ll spend your days exploring, connecting with nature and the land before falling asleep to the chorus of the bush.

Aside from your own tent, you’ll enjoy spending time in the spacious mess and dining tent with your fellow guests. After dinner together at a shared dining table, sink into the huge sofas, get comfortable, and flick through one of the coffee table books or head outside to enjoy a drink or two under the glittering Ugandan night sky together.

Experiences

  • Join expert chimpanzee trackers and head down into the forests of Kyambura Gorge to find families of chimp (amongst other monkey species) that nimbly climb the tall branches with impressive ease right before your eyes.
  • In the early hours, climb into a 4x4 with your guide and explore the park as the wildlife wakes, spotting lion, leopard, elephant, hippo and, if you visit one of the crater lakes, flocks of flamingo.
  • Look out for predators’ glowing eyes and the area’s nocturnal residents on an exciting night drive after dark when you’ll see the landscape from a new perspective.
  • We thoroughly recommend a walking safari or two here, stopping to track animals, smell flowers, even taste wild fruits, in the savannah, forests, or the crater rims.
  • Sail past wading elephant and grunting hippo, listening to the melodies of the local waterbirds on a cruise along the Kazinga Channel in the camp’s shaded safari boat.
