Semliki Safari Lodge
The experience at Semliki feels pure, isolated, and intensely personal, and it’s a true adventure far from the well‑trodden safari circuit. For travellers seeking wilderness at its rawest, Semliki delivers something unforgettable.
This collision of habitats creates an ecosystem found nowhere else in the country: forest and savannah elephants share the same clearings, chimps call from the treetops near camp, and leopards move through the reserve at night.
Together with adjoining Semuliki National Park, Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve is one of Africa’s richest biodiversity zones, home to more than 60 mammal species and over 400 bird species. Access is by road from Kampala or by charter flight to the nearby airstrip.
Ten spacious canvas rooms form the heart of the experience: eight luxury tents and two larger safari suites, each with polished hardwood floors, four‑poster beds, solar‑heated water, and private verandas looking either toward sunrise over the savannah or sunset across the forest and the Rwenzori Mountains. One tent is designed with families in mind.
Meals are shared, unhurried, and full of character – the kind of dining that feels perfectly matched to the setting. Throughout, the team delivers attentive, thoughtful service that makes this remote corner of Uganda feel wonderfully homelike.
Experiences
- Explore a mosaic of habitats, from gallery forest to savannah grassland, each supporting distinct wildlife and offering varied guided walks and game drives.
- Track the dry‑habitat chimpanzees, a unique community adapted to Semliki’s drier forest environment.
- On boat trips around the fringes of Lake Albert, there’s a strong chance of seeing the Shoebill, one of Africa’s most sought-after birds. Semliki is widely regarded as the best place in Uganda for this remarkable species.
- Game drives reveal four of the Big Five species: lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo.
- Enjoy exceptional birding, with 440 recorded species – including Albertine Rift endemics. Semliki is one of Uganda’s premier ornithological destinations.
- Witness forest and savannah elephants together. This is one of the few places in East Africa where the two types coexist and interbreed.
- Experience true wilderness, with low visitor numbers, remote landscapes, and night sounds that remind you just how wild this corner of Uganda remains.

From the Team
"I always encourage travellers heading to Uganda for gorilla trekking to spend time at Semliki Safari Lodge as well. It’s a striking contrast to the misty, mountain forests of the great apes – it’s a more open landscape with its own rare primates: chimpanzees. For anyone craving variety and genuine adventure, Semliki is the perfect complement."
