A Luangwa Ridgeline Chosen by the Elite
When Kenneth Kaunda built his presidential lodge in the 1970s on a ridge above the Luangwa floodplain, he chose the spot for its commanding views over one of Africa’s most diverse wildlife areas. Less than a kilometre away, Puku Ridge shares virtually the same outlook – and the same sense of privilege.

Rebuilt entirely in 2019, the camp is now a collaboration between Chichele Safaris and the award‑winning Chiawa Safaris team. The transformation was total: Luxury Frontiers redesigned the camp using lightweight, environmentally sensitive materials, custom furnishings and an elevated structure suspended above the ground, powered by hydropower. The result is a modern, low‑impact camp with exceptional hospitality and guiding.

Location

The puku antelope gives the camp its name, and it’s one of many species seen at the waterhole and moving across the grassy Kakumbi Floodplain of the Luangwa River. From its elevated perch on a rocky ridge, Puku Ridge commands a prime position in South Luangwa National Park, a place abundant with elephants, giraffes, leopards, lions, wild dogs, zebras and buffalo.

To the north lies the Mfuwe sector, where game is relaxed but visitor numbers higher; to the south, quieter roads offer more scenic, less‑travelled routes. Set on the southern edge of the park’s all‑weather road network, the camp enjoys both remoteness and a longer season than most.

Accommodation

If you listed every feature an ideal safari room should have – including a view so absorbing you barely need to move – you’d arrive at something very close to Puku Ridge’s eight villas. Each combines elegance with modern comforts such as air conditioning and a vast bed facing a picture window of screened sliding doors that open onto a multi‑level deck with dining space, loungers, a sofa and a private plunge pool.

The bathroom has its own panorama, with a bath set in the window, his‑and‑hers basins, and both indoor and outdoor showers. From the deck, a staircase leads to an elevated observation platform, where a four‑poster star bed under a dark mosquito net lets you sleep – or simply marvel – beneath the Luangwa sky.
In most places, such an abode might tempt you to stay put, but at Puku Ridge it’s worth joining fellow guests; not only to trade wildlife stories but to enjoy the camp’s superb communal spaces and dining. The split‑level main decks offer open‑air lounge areas, a firepit, telescopes for wildlife and star viewing, a covered dining area (though dinners often unfold under the stars), and a small library of natural‑history books.

For many, the highlight is the Eye‑to‑Eye photographic hide, tucked discreetly beneath the main deck and looking directly onto the waterhole. Elephants, giraffes and plains game visit regularly, with occasional appearances from leopard or lion. It offers close‑up encounters throughout the day and, with gentle lighting, well into the night.

Experiences

  • Track lions and leopards through the floodplains and woodlands, often encountering them within minutes of leaving camp.
  • Raise a sundowner on the Luangwa River, watching bush babies blink from the trees and plains game graze unbothered as you return to camp under the stars.
  • Explore by day and after dark on expertly guided game drives, using Chiawa Safaris’ low‑impact red‑filter spotlight to reveal hyena, civet, porcupine and other nocturnal species.
  • Get eye‑level wildlife encounters in the Eye‑to‑Eye photographic hide, where elephants, giraffes, antelope – and occasionally leopard or lion – visit the waterhole.
  • Search the fan‑palm woodlands south of camp for the collared palm thrush and follow the resident female leopard as she hunts through dry river channels.
  • Visit Kawaza Village, meeting local residents, joining school assemblies, exploring the clinic and learning traditional skills from maize grinding to brewing local beer.
  • Tour Tribal Textiles, watching artisans create hand‑drawn, water‑based designs and browsing contemporary African textiles that support local employment and education.

Environment
Environment
Environmental responsibility is central to Chiawa Safaris’ operations. Camps are designed to blend into the landscape using renewable and locally sourced materials, with strict “trash in, trash out” policies. Fossil fuel use is reduced through silent inverter systems and low energy lighting, while plastic consumption has been cut by 90% through reusable water bottles. No charcoal is used; instead, eco briquettes and sustainably collected firewood minimise deforestation.
Conservation
Conservation
Chiawa Safaris supports conservation across South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi through funding, logistics and hands on involvement. They raise over USD150,000 annually for conservation and community projects, practise mindful guiding that avoids disturbing wildlife, and use red filtered spotlights on night drives to minimise impact on nocturnal species. Their long standing support for carnivore monitoring, anti poaching initiatives and environmental education ensures that wildlife protection is embedded in every stay.
Community
Community
Chiawa Safaris works closely with local communities, contributing to education, employment and skills development. They support environmental education programmes, provide resources to local schools, and engage sensitively with neighbouring communities to ensure tourism benefits are shared. Their commitment includes using locally sourced natural materials, supporting community run initiatives, and empowering guests with knowledge of local ecology and conservation so their visit contributes positively to the region.
