Luambe Camp
Location
Luambe hosts an animal assemblage similar to that of its larger neighbouring parks, but because there’s only one permanent camp in the national park, humans are the rarest species spotted. The camp itself is located just upstream from one of the largest hippo pods in the Luangwa Valley.
Accommodation
One of the advantages of having so few tents is that they can be large. Indeed, while many safari camps boast of their tents being spacious, these ones truly are. They’re also well-designed for storage, have huge beds, and come with ensuite bathrooms complete with excellent hot showers fuelled by fallen timber.
There are just a few guests to get to know, so you’ll enjoy convivial company, delicious communal meals and cool sundowners together in the open-sided lounge and mess. The whole site, from the design and décor to the scope and the comforts, has the winning recipe of an authentic, personal and special safari experience.
Experiences
- The camp has four main hides, with other small ones being added each year. Some are great for birdwatching, and others give a great view over up to 700 wallowing hippos.
- As the only camp in the park, there are special perks at nighttime. Enjoy night walking trails, treehouse dinners, and stargazing picnics.
- Another perk of privileged access at all hours is that it’s possible to have a sleep-out under the stars on the banks of the river.
- Coffee time is a special occasion at Luambe Camp. Safari chairs are placed in the river so you can slurp a cuppa while watching the camine bee-eaters as they nest in the river cliff.
- The camp is open to wildlife, and there are regular night time visitors: try and identify the tracks at sunrise to see who wandered through.
- Of course, game drives and walking safaris are also offered. Perhaps you’ll have the added goal on one of these of visiting the network of camera traps.
Tucked away in a quiet corner of Kafue National Park – itself a place that’s noted for its remarkably low visitor numbers – Musekese Camp is as quietly intimate as a safari camp gets. Peaceful is an understatement.
Situated at the far-eastern reaches of the park, Anabezi is characterised by the elephants which are drawn to the surrounding Winterthorn trees.

The South Luangwa National Park is one of the finest walking safari locations in all of Africa. As it should be, perhaps, seeing as the concept was born in this very park.
Established in 1950, Kafue National Park is Zambia’s oldest. It’s also the largest, spanning an area that is roughly the same size as the state of Massachusetts.
Victoria Falls is nothing short of a spectacle. Spanning a mile across and standing 350 feet high, Victoria Falls is one one of the world’s largest waterfalls and can be viewed from both Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Lower Zambezi National Park is home to a wealth of wildlife. From the Zambezi River, the park extends across a range of escarpments, offering much-needed respite from the dry season.
North Luangwa National Park sees far fewer visitors than its sister to the south, which is great for privacy and feeling like you’re in the wild, but animals can be shy.
Liuwa Plain National Park is a special place. Wildlife here was nearly eradicated due to poaching and hunting, but the area has been protected since 2003 and nature is bouncing back.
Zambia is the path less-travelled, which means that a safari here is always one with guaranteed privacy. It’s also an experience of how African exploration always used to be, with bush camps deep in game-rich territory and walking safaris led by expert guides.
