Though it feels remarkably wild, this part of Chile was settled by indigenous people at least 18,500 years ago. The archaeological site at Monte Verde is especially fascinating – at the time of its discovery, it was the oldest inhabited site in the Americas. You can still see the remains of burned wood, animal bones, and footprints preserved in clay that suggest Monte Verde was once a small village.
