Best Time To Go
April to October

As this is a desert region, you can expect settled and sunny weather in any month. The Atacama Desert and Bolvian Salt Flats are an ideal destination in the southern hemisphere winter, from April to October, when the weather is mild and the skies are clear. Very occasional rain in the months between January and March can lead to dramatic and beautiful desert blooms but also flash flooding.

Ideal Length
11 Days

This length of time allows you to spend time in San Pedro de Atacama adjusting to the altitude and environment, enjoying the journey through the Altiplano, and also making the most of the experiences at Uyuni.

San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
The start point of the journey is the base of Explora Atacama, in the small town of San Pedro de Atacama. It’s a place for your body to adjust to the rhythm of the environment and prepare for the journey ahead.

  • Relax in luxury accommodation, making good use of the four interconnecting pools.
  • Meet the guide for your journey and discuss your priorities and preferences.
  • Explore the nearby canyons of the La Sal and Domeyko mountain ranges.
  • Soak in the invigorating Puritama hot springs, surrounded by golden foxtail grasses.
  • Make use of the hotel’s dedicated astronomical observatory.
Days 5 - 6
Ramaditas, Bolivia
From the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, the journey heads across a rust-red landscape to the border with Bolivia. Switching to a new vehicle, you’ll now be traversing the Altiplano, the world’s second-largest high-altitude plateau.

  • Visit the Sol de la Mañana geyser and fumarole geothermal field. At 4,850 metres in altitude, it’s about as high as the summit of Mt Blanc.
  • The journey winds its way through salt flats, lagoons and wetlands, a landscape of vivid colours beneath a deep blue sky.
  • See the staggering spectacle of huge flocks of flamingos wading in the mineral-rich shallow waters of the Colorada lagoon.
  • Venture out from the Ramaditas mountain lodge to visit extraordinary rock formations and learn about the ecology of the Altiplano.
Days 7 - 8
Chituca, Bolivia
Journeying on to the mountain lodge of Chituca, there are opportunities to learn about the culture and lifestyle of the hardy and adaptable people who have made the altiplano their home.

  • Walk through historic mines and journey on ancient routeways. See colourful quinoa plantations.
  • Decipher age-old petroglyphs and pictoglyphs, preserved from weathering by the extreme aridity.
  • Visit the mysterious black waters of the Laguna Turquiri and spot its endemic waterfowl.
  • Feel the power of the magma beneath the Andes, and see its effects: geysers, bubbling mud and towering volcanic cones.
Days 9 - 11
Uyuni, Bolivia
The route from Chituca to Uyuni is extraordinary and varied, encompassing modern and ancient settlements, fascinating ecosystems, geological marvels, and the end-point of the world’s highest and largest salt flat.

  • See forests of towering cacti amid ancient agricultural terraces.
  • Visit the ruins at the settlement of San Pedro de Quemes and learn about the history of the Pacific War.
  • Venture out, perhaps by bike, onto the other-worldly environment of a vast salt flat.
  • Hike on the slopes of Tunapa volcano to an altitude of 5,400 metres.
  • Perhaps see the mummified remains of pre-Columbian people, preserved near the village of Coquesa on the flank of Tunapa.

An Oasis in the Atacama, Chile

The Atacama may be the world’s driest non-polar desert, but that doesn’t mean it’s totally parched. In a few fortunate places, water can be found, such as the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama. Settled first by the Atacameños people, it was part of Bolivia after independence from Spain until Chile claimed it during the War of the Pacific.

This is the cool oasis that serves as the gateway to this amazing trip, and there’s no better place to adjust to the altitude and low humidity than in the four linked pools of Explora’s luxury desert lodge on the outskirts of town.

Refreshed, you’ll then want to wander the pathways around ancient buildings in more than 17 hectares of surrounding grounds before coming back to an evening festival of Andean music on the patio of an adobe house. In the clear desert air at 2,407 metres, the lodge’s observatory is an unmissable perk.

Time for Desert Forays in Chile

It's in San Pedro that you’ll meet your guide for the journey, and you’ll be able to discuss your priorities for the trip, along with how you’ll see them. Some people are landscape fanatics, some want more culture, some want to hike, some like to bike or ride a horse, and most want to try a bit of everything.

The first couple of days here present opportunities to venture out into the canyons of the La Sal and Domeyko mountain ranges to experience and get accustomed to the desert. In town, there are two fascinating museums: one devoted to the archaeology of the ancient Atacama civilisations and the other to meteorites.

Also within reach are the Puritama hot springs, where the warm pools lie in a canyon floor surrounded by swaying golden fountain grasses. If you can’t wait for the salt flats of Bolivia, Salar de Atacama is another possible excursion.

Atacama and the Border with Bolivia

From San Pedro, it’s only 50 kilometres to the border with Bolivia, where there’s a switch of vehicles for the rigours of what lies ahead. The waypoint destination for this leg is Explora’s extraordinary mountain home of Ramaditas, but along the way there are stunning things to see.

Having climbed more than 2,000 metres to an altitude as high as the peaks of the Alps, you’ll be in the realm of Sol de la Mañana, a field of geysers, fumaroles and geothermal pools. The mosaic of salt flats, wetlands and lagoons reveals further marvels, such as the great flocks of flamingos. Under the vivid blue dome of the high-altitude sky, the intensity of their pink plumage is almost implausible.

Astonishing too are the rock formations, some of which are so monumental that they are called ‘cathedrals’. They have certainly existed longer than any church made by humans.

The Altiplano Awaits

Bolivia’s Altiplano

The next base along the journey is Explora’s other mountain lodge, Chituca. Like Ramaditas, its prefabricated design minimises its environmental footprint in its pristine environment. Super-comfortable, but intrepid and isolated, its stilted hillside position commands an extraordinary vista of the Altiplano. This is the world’s second largest high-altitude plateau, and it is phenomenal in all senses.

A modern but temporary building such as Chituca is just the latest page in a chapter of human involvement in this seemingly inhospitable landscape. Ancient petroglyphs and shepherd shelters remind us that people have ventured here, and colourful quinoa plantations show that the Altiplano has many uses.

Jewel-like lagoons dot the Altiplano, including mysterious Laguna Turquiri, with its towering rock formations and pincushion yareta plants lining its shores. Known sometimes as Laguna Negra – the Black Lake – it is also home to endemic black ducks and many other bird species.

Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

Your exclusive Bolivia experience culminates at the surreal Salar de Uyuni, where luxury meets raw natural wonder. Flatter than seems possible, the Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest high-altitude salt flat. Formed by the evaporation of the converging ephemeral waterways that drain into this basin, it’s normally a dazzling salty crust and sometimes a shallow inch-deep shimmering lake. What never changes, though, is the sense of the bizarre, because this is a dreamlike landscape like a Dali painting. You’ll find yourself questioning dimensions and overwhelmed by the silent strangeness.

The view of the salt flats from Explora’s luxury Uyuni Lodge on the slopes of Tunupa volcano is extraordinary. From here, there are excursions out onto the flats in vehicles, on foot and by bike, perhaps to one of the cactus-clad islands that rise out of the salt.

A trek up the volcano to over 5,400 metres is a challenge that many will relish. You’ll only get higher when you fly out from Uyuni airport.

Tips from the Team

  • This itinerary can also be fitted into 10 days, with one fewer day in San Pedro de Atacama.
  • Combine this amazing trip with another one in South America. Perhaps consider Explora’s Patagonia Lodge, or even Easter Island at Explora’s Rapa Nui Lodge.
  • You’ll fall in love with Chile if you stay for a few days in a vineyard hotel in the Wineland region. Consider the extraordinary Vik Chile.
  • For a dose of culture, consider enjoying one of the many sophisticated hotels in Santiago. With great views from its rooftop pool, you can’t beat The Singular.
  • Make the most of all parts of this journey to enjoy incredible stargazing. The area round San Pedro has several international observatories, including the European Southern Observatory. The Chituca Lodge has a great binocular telescope.
