Location

Camp Kalahari is located in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans - a series of utterly flat prehistoric super lakes. Thousands of years ago the area would have been an immense wetland. Now, due to movements in the earth’s crust, the waters have long since disappeared making it one of the most remote and hauntingly beautiful desert locations in Botswana. 50 years ago, Jack Bousfield, father of the current owner Ralph set up his original camp in a beautiful little oasis of palm trees and grassland in a corner of the Makgadikgadi Pans. Today, Ralph has developed his father’s vision and now runs three spectacular camps on the Makgadikgadi Pans.

Situated in the same location as Jack’s small camp, set up during his first pioneering visit into the Makgadikgadi, Camp Kalahari takes you back a time of exploration, with its wonderfully relaxed and traditional style.

Tented Family Suites in the Makgadikgadi

The camp has 12 spacious Meru style tents, two of which can accommodate a family of four.
Camp Kalahari is one of the only properties with dedicated family suites in Makgadikgadi and is the laidback sister of renowned Jack’s Camp.

The meru tents are atmospheric and en suite, with eclectic furnishings that set the intrepid tone for your stay. Wrought iron four-poster beds and décor is simple, yet authentic. Each suite opens up onto a private deck, where you can sit watching the sun rise over the palms that tower above the plains.

Tailored Luxury in the Desert

Camp Kalahari is one of three camps in a million-acre private reserve, so your privacy is guaranteed. A large swimming pool is a fresh respite from the afternoon heat of the desert. When and what you eat is flexible, perfectly suited for everyone in the family.

The open-air lounge tent is where you’ll enjoy meals together and there’s also a library and living space, which invite you in with funky, African curios and colonial antiques. Staff will always be at hand to keep you company between activities, so parents can enjoy a siesta while youngsters bake or ramble around outside!

What to See and Do in the Makgadikgadi
The experience at Camp Kalahari is unforgettable, with a wide range of activities suitable for the whole family. Race across the lunar expanse of the Makgadikgadi salt flats on quad bikes before enjoying sundowners on the pan.

Exploring by horseback and open vehicle are also options. Children and parents alike will enjoy meeting the resident meerkat troop. The curious little critters scurry around you — don’t be surprised if one of them climbs atop your head to use you as a watchtower!

The interest in this area lies firstly in its amazing remote location, and in the way the plants, wildlife, birds and people have adapted to this strange desert environment over the millennia.
Sometimes you will be guided by San Bushmen revealing something of their age-old survival and tracking skills. You can walk with them in the morning learning about desert adapted vegetation, and later in the day can move further afield across the fragile salt encrusted pans seeking out wildlife and evidence of ancient civilisations where you might find rock engravings and shards of pottery.

When you first arrive at Camp Kalahari you will wonder how anything could survive here, yet you quickly become acquainted with birdlife and the desert wildlife which includes families of meerkats, brown hyena, aardvark and smaller antelope such as gemsbok and springbok as well as the mighty Kalahari Black Maned Lion.

During the wet season, particularly from February to May, the area often receives sporadic thunderstorms which can bring about a migration of zebra, wildebeest and other creatures in search of water in these ancient lake lands.

Conservation
Conservation
Near the end of an extreme drought in northern Botswana, ten game waterholes inside and bordering the Makgadikgadi National Park were in severe disrepair from theft and wear and tear. Natural Selection, Camp Kalahari’s parent company, were responsible for replacing and repairing all solar pumps in order to support the migrating animals in this area.

Young children with early onset vision impairment can experience delayed motor, language, emotional, social and cognitive development, with lifelong consequences. Wild Vision and Natural Selection have worked together to address this challenge in rural areas of Botswana by bringing efficient on-site eye testing and eyeglass distribution to remote schools. The positive impact of this initiative has been tremendous.

Natural Selection are working with the Wild Shots Outreach initiative. Every year they will be running workshops at some Natural Selection camps. This is an initiative that engages with unemployed youth from disadvantaged communities, teaching them about conservation and nature through photography, culminating in a game drive.
