Dinaka

A Place of Desert Wisdom and Wild Encounters
Dinaka means ‘horns’ – a theme celebrated in the traditional dances of the local !Naro San Bushmen, who have lived in harmony with this demanding landscape for millennia. Their presence reveals that Dinaka is far more than a wildlife destination with its own cast of desert‑adapted species; it’s a place to learn lessons of respect, resilience and deep connection from those who know the Kalahari best.

With very few guests, Dinaka feels genuinely personal. It’s the ideal base for experiencing the Kalahari as part of a wider Botswana journey, offering a striking contrast to the watery world of the Okavango Delta.

Location
Set within a 20,000-hectare private conservancy along the northern edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Dinaka offers front‑row access to one of Southern Africa’s most unusual desert ecosystems. This ever‑changing landscape shelters iconic Kalahari species such as black-maned lion, springbok, oryx and brown hyena, and after the annual rains it transforms into a lush sweep of grasses and wildflowers, revealing a completely different side of the desert.

Dinaka has its own private airstrip and is accessible by air or road, making it a camp that pairs well with a contrasting region such as the Okavango.
Bedroom Dinaka Kalahari
Accommodation
Dinaka’s eight spacious tented suites – accommodating up to 20 guests – are raised on wooden decks overlooking a thriving permanent waterhole, giving you a front‑row seat to the daily rhythms of Kalahari wildlife.

Thoughtfully spaced for privacy, each tent includes an ensuite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers and a private deck facing the bush. A generous two‑bedroom family suite provides an ideal base for small groups or families seeking comfort and space in this desert setting.
All tents connect to the main area via wooden walkways, making the entire camp fully wheelchair accessible. At its heart lies a warm, inviting communal hub: an open dining room and bar, a comfortable lounge layered with natural textures, and a broad viewing deck centred on a glowing campfire – the perfect place to gather as the Kalahari sky deepens into night.

Beyond the main area, guests can enjoy a swimming pool lined with sun loungers and a number of photographic hides; a couple of which are sunken underground and equipped with toilet facilities for those committed to capturing the perfect black‑maned lion shot. A dedicated star deck offers unforgettable evenings beneath the desert’s vast, glittering canopy. Dining is relaxed and generous, often enjoyed outdoors to make the most of the Kalahari’s shifting light and endless horizons.

Dinaka for Families
With its spacious two‑bedroom family tent and flexible, child‑friendly meals, Dinaka is an excellent choice for families wanting a gentle introduction to the Kalahari. The camp is also small enough to consider an exclusive-use booking for group of family and friends.

While the Young Explorers programme is available, the experience that consistently captivates older children is walking with the San Bushmen. These interpretive walks reveal the medicinal and practical uses of plants and animals, offering a rare glimpse into ancient survival skills and deep‑rooted cultural knowledge. It’s an inspiring, hands‑on way for families to connect with the Kalahari’s first inhabitants and the landscape they’ve understood for millennia.

Why We Include Dinaka in Our Journeys

We include Dinaka for the rare blend of culture, contrast and intimacy it brings to a Botswana itinerary. Time spent with the San Bushmen offers a fascinating cultural dimension, while the Kalahari’s dry landscapes provide a wonderful counterpoint to the Okavango Delta.

Its sunken photographic hide appeals to photographers; its small scale and family‑friendly setup suit any group size; and its shared ownership with Kanana Camp in the Okavango ensures seamless transfers and consistently high standards.

Conservation
Conservation
Dinaka contributes a nightly donation to Rhino Conservation Botswana, supporting the protection of the country’s endangered black and white rhino. The charity’s long‑term goal is to rebuild strong, free‑roaming populations in the Okavango Delta. By staying at Dinaka, a portion of your visit directly supports this vital conservation effort for one of Earth’s most ancient species.
Community
Community
Ker & Downey Botswana partners with San Bushman communities to offer educational walks that preserve and share traditional ecological knowledge. Employment, guiding opportunities and cultural interpretation ensure local communities benefit directly from tourism within this remote Kalahari landscape.
Environment
Environment
Dinaka recently transitioned fully to solar power, eliminating generator noise and emissions. As part of Chobe Holdings’ sustainability ethos, the camp’s solar plant significantly reduces its carbon footprint while supporting quieter, low impact operations in this fragile desert ecosystem.

What Really Matters to Young Children on a Kenya Family Safari

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!
