Semi-arid landscapes showcase the adaptability of life

Kalahari

In dramatic contrast to the Okavango Delta, the Kalahari Desert receives almost no rain for most of the year. Wildlife and plants alike must adapt to the harsh conditions until the rainy season arrives. In dramatic contrast to the Okavango Delta, the Kalahari Desert receives almost no rain for most of the year. Wildlife and plants alike must adapt to the harsh conditions until the rainy season arrives.
Why the Kalahari?
From December through April, drenching thunderstorms bring lush greenery and refreshing pools of water to this spectacular region. The Kalahari teems with life – it’s an especially fascinating place for observing smaller animals like meerkats, jackals and brown hyena. You can also spot ostrich, a variety of antelope including the distinctive gemsbok and kudu. Cheetah and black-maned lion also frequent the Kalahari during the wet season, lurking in the short grasses in wait of smaller antelopes.

The Kalahari is a beautiful expanse of sandy plains – it’s a paradise for landscape photographers and anyone seeking a unique safari experience. Nighttime game drives by open vehicle are a special treat here, allowing a glimpse into a way of life that only happens after the sun goes down.
  • An exceptional contrast to the lush Okavango Delta.
  • Most active from December to April when seasonal rains bring the desert to life.
  • Watch smaller creatures like jackal, meerkats and porcupine.
  • Catch a glimpse of black-maned lions or cheetah.
  • Fly into exclusive desert camps with specialist desert guides.
  • Enjoy walking safaris and game drives after dark.

Go Exclusive In Botswana
The best way to give your family the facilities it seeks may be to book out an entire camp or lodge. Perhaps you are planning a multi-generation safari. Or you may want to fulfil a dream of walking, mokoroing and camping out in the Okavango. You may simply crave an extra degree of privacy. Most lodges we use take fewer than 16 guests, some take only eight, so booking a whole lodge is a viable option.
