Conservation
& Luxury in the Cape Floral Kingdom
Grootbos began in 1991, when nature enthusiast Michael Lutzeyer bought a small farm above Walker Bay, captivated by the extraordinary fynbos ecosystem and sweeping ocean views. What started as a modest guest house soon evolved into a pioneering conservation‑led lodge. Within three years, the first accommodation – now Garden Lodge – opened, followed by Forest Lodge a decade later, each designed to sit lightly within the landscape.

From the outset, Grootbos positioned itself not simply as a luxury retreat but as a model of how tourism, conservation and community uplift could work together. The Grootbos Foundation, established in 2003, formalised this mission, launching programmes in fynbos restoration, sustainable agriculture, environmental education and skills development for local communities.

Location

Sitting on a hillside overlooking the Walker Bay coastline, Grootbos Forest Lodge is right in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Its 3,500‑hectare private reserve protects exceptional fynbos diversity: more than 765 plant species, over 100 endangered species, and several found nowhere else.

Ancient milkwood forests surround the lodge, while dunes fall away to ocean views stretching towards the distant Cape of Good Hope. Offshore, Walker Bay offers Marine Big Five adventures, from whales and dolphins to sharks, seals and penguins. The coastal town of Hermanus lies just 5km along the shore, famed for cliff‑path walks and seasonal whale watching.

Accommodation

Secluded and intimate, Grootbos Forest Lodge consists of just 16 luxury suites accessed by a pathway that winds its way beneath lush forest canopy. Each suite is opulent and spacious, with a feather soft bed, stunning tiled bathroom and separate lounge area. Featuring floor to ceiling glass doors leading out to your private terrace, every room affords impossibly romantic views of the reserve, and beyond to the sea.

For couples who desire an extra special stay, the Honeymoon Suite has the addition of a private pool to cool off in during the heat of the day.
In the bright and airy main area, you’ll find a cosy sunken lounge and bar area, where you can borrow a book to read beside the fire. Culinary excellence is served up in the dining room, where you can easily spend an evening savouring a delicious meal and sampling superb South African wine from the subterranean cellar.

Outside there are two verandas: one sprinkled with sun loungers overlooking the glittering infinity pool; the other with tables allowing you to dine al fresco while appreciating the spectacular vistas. There’s also the option to enjoy your evening meal around the magical milkwood forest boma (traditional campfire), warmed by the flickering flames as gleaming stars appear in the dark skies.
