Location

A thrilling helicopter ride from the pioneering safari town of Maun in the north of Botswana takes you to secluded Daunara Safari Camp set within one of Africa’s greatest landscape miracles: the Okavango Delta.

Daunara is at the heart of a community-run concession spanning more than 100,000 hectares of prime safari territory. Its island location next to a permanent body of water is the perfect base for venturing out into diverse surrounding habitats offering exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the whole year.

Accommodation

With just five elegant tented suites, Daunara is small in scale and truly special. While individual bookings are possible, it’s also ideal for sole use for those who want complete privacy, exclusivity and flexibility. If you’re after a safari experience for your multi-generational family group, or just a clutch of friends, then Daunara – with three king ensuite rooms and another suite with two king rooms – is the answer.

Undeniably luxurious, the sophisticated neutral tones of the rooms are not ostentatious and certainly don’t attempt to compete with what’s visible outside.
From their shady decks, each spacious room enjoys a vista overlooking waters where the wallowing hippos offer constant interest. You don’t need to take a seat on the deck, though, because you can watch the action from your huge four-poster bed through the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors.

When you’ve cooled off in your own outdoor shower, it will be time to head to the stylish communal bar and lounge – complete with a roaring fire in the winter – and then enjoy a meal prepared in the family-friendly house kitchen. An armchair beneath the tented eaves of the main lodge may invite peaceful snoozing between safari adventures, but you’ll also be tempted by the gorgeous rim-flow pool.

Experiences

In a camp this small, experiences can be tailored directly to the interests and characters of guests, so these are just a few ideas of what you can enjoy.

  • Water-based safaris are ideal in the Okavango. The camp’s jetty takes you out into a realm that can be explored by ranger-driven motor launches, or in the peaceful serenity of a mokoro canoe.
  • While traditional safari experiences are exceptional here, Daunara offers another twist for those who want it: a ‘Wellness Safari’, which combines traditional game drives with personalised fitness and relaxation built in.
  • Helicopter adventures are a great way to see the delta from the air and to head to amazing locations slightly further afield such as the Makgadikgadi Pans or to see the ancient rock art of the Tsodillo Hills.
  • Experience conservation efforts first-hand by spending time with the Elephant Haven, a non-profit organisation that rehabilitates orphaned calves.
  • As this is a community concession, it has close links with livestock farmers. You can visit a herding programme designed to reduce carnivore conflict and thereby maintain the predators that will have made your safari excursions so exciting.
  • Want to lend a helping hand in the camp? Don’t be scared to venture into the kitchen. The chefs will enjoy teaching you as you assist.

Conservation
Conservation
The vision of the founders of Daunara – David and Lisa Lubbock, and Matt Copham – was to create a situation where conservation was incentivised as an economic benefit. Low in environmental impact but a significant improvement to the local economy, the camp plays a significant role in the community’s buy-in to the preservation of their concession. Guests can visit herding programmes, an elephant orphanage and the Eco-Exist venture.
Community
Community
The Daunara Foundation has worked with the local community to build a school, a community centre, and a clinic. The very name Daunara comes from the local village, and the land around it is a concession where local people benefit from the finances that eco-tourism generates. Currently, the lodge is establishing a community garden that will not only generate income via supplying the kitchen but will also improve security for the village.
Environment
Environment
The camp is run entirely on photovoltaic energy, with a small generator for emergencies. Food waste is fed into a state-of-the-art composter, compacted and then taken to the lodge’s community garden. Other waste is sent to Maun where community recycling initiatives make use of it. Water waste is processed using a filtration system and biodegradable products. Grey water is used for irrigation.

Go Exclusive In Botswana

The best way to give your family the facilities it seeks may be to book out an entire camp or lodge. Perhaps you are planning a multi-generation safari. Or you may want to fulfil a dream of walking, mokoroing and camping out in the Okavango. You may simply crave an extra degree of privacy. Most lodges we use take fewer than 16 guests, some take only eight, so booking a whole lodge is a viable option.
