Duba Explorers

Duba Explorers Camp is one of the Okavango Delta's most remote and stylish camps. Although it is in the heart of the wilderness - in a vast private concession used as a base for National Geographic film making no less - it feels like a five-star retreat. Location

Tucked in the northernmost reaches of the Delta on a 77,000-acre private concession, Duba Explorers is set on an island surrounded by large flood plains and is only accessible by boat or helicopter. The camp’s position is idyllic, overlooking the Okavango’s glistening waters and shaded by large ebony, fig and garcinia trees. Duba Explorers shares this area only with its bigger sister Duba Plains. This part of the Okavango Delta is dense with wildlife and home to large herds of elephant along with plains game, giraffe and hippo, but it is perhaps best known for its population of predators including lion, leopard, and wild dog, too.

Accommodation

Evoking the romance of an early safari expedition of the 1920s, Duba Explorers has just five elegantly designed tents – each raised off the ground with a private verandah overlooking the river. The intimate size of the camp ensures that guests enjoy a relaxed and exclusive atmosphere. Inside the spacious tents you will find the deep wood furniture and brass fittings synonymous with Great Plains Conservation, complemented by light and luxurious soft furnishings. In addition, in every tent there is a pair of Swarovski 42x8 binoculars for you to use whilst out exploring.
The main area of the camp is also under sweeping canvas and on raised decking, overlooking a lagoon to the floodplains beyond. Enjoy dinner under the stars, immersed in nature in the open-air dining area and unwind in the sumptuous lounge, under a leafy canopy of mature trees. Come evening, there’s a crackling fire-pit for relaxation and sharing of exciting stories.

Experiences

  • Explore waterways by mokoro, a traditional wooden canoe, for the very best views of this spectacularly beautiful ecosystem.
  • Enjoy game drives in the daytime, observing the wide variety of animals that go about their daily life before your eyes, or at night, using a flashlight to spot nocturnal creatures like jackal or porcupine.
  • With over 350 recorded species in the area, this camp is a haven for birders. Keep your eyes peeled for the Pel’s fishing owl and rare wattled crane!
  • Budding photographers can make the most of the camp’s customised vehicles with raised roofs, built in camera rests and charging facilities (and, of course, plenty of snacks!).
  • Grab your walking boots for a stroll through the wetlands, stopping to spot animal tracks and learning more about the landscape and its residents.
  • Catch and release fishing is great fun and allows you to see some of the Delta’s aquatic species up close.

Conservation
Conservation
Duba Explorers parent company; Great Plains Conservation (GPC) have set up The Project Ranger, a response to the Covid-19 crisis. The project will fill a critical gap in the wildlife monitoring, surveying, and anti-poaching operations of existing NGOs in Africa through an emergency fund supporting those on the front-lines of conservation. Their aim is to raise $5 million to support the rangers and the critical work they do to prevent poaching in Kenya.
Environment
Environment
In 2019 GPC began a new programme; Conservation Grows. Through the project they aim to restore indigenous trees to landscapes across Botswana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. Working with local communities and schools Conservation Grows teaches the value of indigenous trees and their critical role in functioning ecosystems.
Community
Community
Since 2010, GPC have partnered with local women in the communities surrounding their camps to honour and support traditional handicrafts and provide income generating opportunities through the sale of beadwork and other products in the camps’ bush boutiques. Across camps in Botswana and Kenya GPC has purchased more than $30,000 worth of items from women’s craft groups over the previous three years.

Go Exclusive In Botswana

The best way to give your family the facilities it seeks may be to book out an entire camp or lodge. Perhaps you are planning a multi-generation safari. Or you may want to fulfil a dream of walking, mokoroing and camping out in the Okavango. You may simply crave an extra degree of privacy. Most lodges we use take fewer than 16 guests, some take only eight, so booking a whole lodge is a viable option.
