Location

Set right in front of the only water source for miles, Elephant Pan’s location is unrivalled when it comes to wildlife viewing. In a grove of mopane trees, the camp overlooks a lagoon frequented mostly by elephant, though antelope and other thirsty creatures do head here too.

From here, you’ll explore the Khwai Private Game Reserve, 200,000 hectares of forest, woodland, and winding water channels known as one of the best game-viewing areas of Botswana. Lion, cheetah, packs of wild dog, and leopard can all be seen here as well as giraffe, zebra, buffalo and a variety of plains game.

Accommodation

At Elephant Pan you’ll be sleeping in one of just eight tents, each carefully placed to overlook the waterhole. Wake to the unbeatable sight of a group of elephant drinking, trumpeting and flapping their enormous ears - this truly is a case of wildlife at your window!

The general atmosphere here is one of peace and authenticity. You’ll have everything you need: a comfy bed, hot showers in your en-suite, a writing desk, and a private deck where you can spend hours just watching wildlife here go about its daily life.
You’ll eat in the main area of camp, where wholesome and tasty meals are served. There’s also a lounge and pool where you can relax between activities. Of course, you’re never far from an animal or two, even in the communal camp areas.

Evenings are often spent in the open-air boma where you can join your fellow guests for a spot of star-gazing. At night, the waterhole is illuminated, meaning your game-viewing continues into the evening, without needing to leave your seat!

Experiences

  • Make yourself comfortable in one of the camp’s two sunken hides and experience exciting wildlife encounters, closer than ever before.

  • Spend an afternoon learning about the local community in a nearby village, meeting residents and visiting a preschool.
  • Join rangers on a pre-dawn trip to track predators and their spoor, patrol, collect data and check on conservation projects, all before lunch!
  • Guided walks through the bush are the best way to get to know the land, learning more about the trees, plants and tiny critters that all contribute to this incredible ecosystem.
  • Hop into a 4x4 with your guide and head out on an exciting game drive, for wildlife sightings galore.

Conservation
Conservation
To help protect the reserve’s wildlife, Elephant Pan’s parent company, Natural Selection, funds the purchase of equipment that rangers need to be successful whilst taking care of this very large reserve. This equipment includes binoculars, two-way radios, tablets, cameras and waterproof clothing.
Community
Community
In conjunction with a local charity, Natural Selection run a local children’s centre for the younger residents of the Khwai village. The centre provides children with a safe place to play and learn alongside daily nutritious meals. Recently, a new kitchen was added to the centre and a garden where the centre can grow some of their own food is under way.

The best way to give your family the facilities it seeks may be to book out an entire camp or lodge. Perhaps you are planning a multi-generation safari. Or you may want to fulfil a dream of walking, mokoroing and camping out in the Okavango. You may simply crave an extra degree of privacy. Most lodges we use take fewer than 16 guests, some take only eight, so booking a whole lodge is a viable option.
