Laragai House
With exceptional wildlife all around – including thriving rhinos – each day in the conservancy feels extraordinary, made even better by returning to a house designed for pure comfort and total relaxation.
Laragai translates as ‘The Place to Be’. Need we say more?
Location
To the south lie the lush Ngare Ndare Forest and the slopes of Mount Kenya; to the north, the wild Mukogodo Forest, the Wamba Mountains and desert stretching to the horizon. The scale of this elemental landscape is best appreciated when you arrive by the most convenient method: the house’s private airstrip.
Accommodation
An expansive, characterful family home designed for exclusive use, Laragai House offers generous space and comfort for up to 16 guests in eight ensuite bedrooms. With four double rooms and four twin rooms, it’s perfectly suited to multi‑generational families or groups of friends seeking both privacy and convivial shared living.
Bedrooms are arranged to give guests their own sense of retreat, while communal areas – including the dining room, drawing room, bar, TV room and games room – provide inviting spaces to gather, relax and reconnect.
The house is richly equipped, featuring a sculptural swimming pool perched on escarpment edge, gym, tennis court, and leisure options such as table tennis, darts, boules and croquet. Riding stables and an onsite masseuse further elevate the experience.
As an exclusive‑use property, all meals are enjoyed together. Menus are fresh, seasonal and professionally prepared, drawing on organic produce from the garden and high‑quality ingredients from local farms. Dining is flexible – from outdoor breakfasts to fireside dinners – with bush picnics and al fresco lunches adding to the sense of freedom and ease. Chefs happily cater for dietary needs and younger guests.
Experiences
- Track rhinos on foot with Borana’s expert rangers and witness some of the 160 black and white rhinos that roam this remarkable landscape.
- Head out for Big Five wildlife viewing – on horseback, in an open vehicle, on foot, or simply settle in and watch animals wander past the house.
- Venture into the Ngare Ndare Forest, exploring its ancient trees, crystal‑clear pools and elevated canopy walkway.
- Join a guided walk or birdwatching outing to explore valleys, ridges and forests alive with Laikipia’s unique highland species.
- Venture out on a night drive to discover the conservancy’s nocturnal world, from shy predators to rare, after‑dark specialists.
- Cycle the conservancy or wander the gardens, enjoying a slower, more intimate way to experience Laragai’s surroundings. Another option is to grab a paddleboard for communing with nature on the dam.
- Take to the skies by helicopter or plan a day trip to explore the lakes and peaks of Mount Kenya or the dramatic northern frontier.

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!
