Location

You’ll find Mbamba set in a private concession in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta. This area combines open grasslands with hidden islands thick with forest, sparkling lagoons, tiny waterways, and vast floodplains.

With this range of habitats comes varied wildlife, promising lots of exciting wildlife encounters! Lion and wild dog are often seen here, alongside large herds of elephant and buffalo.

Avid birders will be pleased to know there’s plenty of avian life too, including the Pel’s fishing owl and wattled crane.

Accommodation

Set under enormous leadwood trees, this charming camp comprises 12 tents of various sizes, including some especially for families. Each features dark wooden floors, soft Persian rugs, flowing rich fabrics and sumptuous four poster beds, perfect for sinking into after a busy day of exploration.

The camp is very much inspired by the early days of safari but though the style is vintage, you needn’t compromise on comfort. You’ll have an en-suite bathroom with double sinks and large windows where you can watch the delta wake up. There’s also a private deck for when you want to sit back and enjoy the sun.
The vintage safari theme continues in the main mess areas of the camp. These carefully thought out spaces offer plenty of spots to relax. Put your feet up in one of the two lounges, a glass of something cool in hand, or spend an hour or so browsing the camp’s library.

Meals are served either al fresco or under canvas, and are the perfect time to swap stories with your fellow guests. After sunset, grab a nightcap and while away the evening stargazing, warmed by the flickering flames of the firepit.

Experiences

  • There’s no better way to explore the delta than by boat - take it slow on a traditional mokoro cruise through the lily pads or hop on a motorised boat to seek out the best wildlife spot (stopping for a sundowner, of course).
  • Take a couple of hours to enjoy a catch and release fishing trip - this one is particularly fun for families.
  • See the delta from the skies in a helicopter, from up here you can truly appreciate how vast and intricate this ecosystem is.
  • Take a post-lunch dip in the camp’s pool, cooling off and enjoying the uninterrupted delta views.
  • No safari would be complete without game drives - hop in a vehicle with your guide to explore and get up close to the area’s wildlife.
  • Learn more about Botswana’s history by heading to Tsodilo Hills, an ancient rock art site with over 4,000 paintings.

Community
Community
Mbamba’s parent company, Natural Selection, has provided three buses known as the Elephant Express. These buses cover routes that need to be travelled by local people but that are also known as elephant highways. They ensure patients going to two medical clinics and children heading to three schools are able to do so safely.
Conservation
Conservation
Wild-ranging livestock frequently come into contact with predators and so wildlife-human relationships in local communities can be very negative. Back in 2019, a community herding programme was established to safeguard farmers’ cattle, restore overgrazed landscapes, and reduce unsafe methods of repelling lion.

Go Exclusive In Botswana

The best way to give your family the facilities it seeks may be to book out an entire camp or lodge. Perhaps you are planning a multi-generation safari. Or you may want to fulfil a dream of walking, mokoroing and camping out in the Okavango. You may simply crave an extra degree of privacy. Most lodges we use take fewer than 16 guests, some take only eight, so booking a whole lodge is a viable option.
