For the Well-Travelled
Discovery Never Ends
Here’s the twist: the world isn’t a normal book that could ever be read cover-to-cover. It hides footnotes, secret chapters, mischievous marginalia and spins off entire bonus editions. Just when you think you’re reaching the end, it cheerfully hands you more and invites you to keep reading.
At Journeysmiths, we embrace the fact that our contents page keeps expanding. The examples below, with their sub‑plots of environmental vision, persistence, remoteness and a dash of piracy, show how – like any great book – a guide can reveal just how far the story can go.
Marvellous Madagascar
With 100,000 indigenous trees planted and villas built from natural and recycled materials, Miavana by Time + Tide emerged as Madagascar’s most exclusive private‑island retreat. Today, with forests flourishing not just with trees but with lemurs – including the reintroduced crowned lemur – Nosy Ankao stands as an inspiring tale of environmental transformation, and a unique expression of island luxury.
You can fly to Ankarana to wander among its razor‑sharp limestone towers, or to Amber Mountain, a cool volcanic highland of waterfalls and crater lakes. Other flights skim over remote coastlines before touching down on deserted beaches for snorkelling or a picnic, or head inland to meet communities whose villages are otherwise far beyond the tourist map. Some excursions focus on wildlife, seeking endangered lemurs in the Daraina region or tracing the contrasts between dry deciduous forest and lush montane habitats.
Each flight is a way of seeing Madagascar from angles and altitudes that reveal just how extraordinary this corner of the world really is.
A short wander away is the Cabinet de Curiosities, Miavana’s private museum, where Madagascar’s natural and cultural treasures are displayed with theatrical flair: delicate butterfly collections, an extinct elephant‑bird egg, a pygmy‑hippo skeleton, antique manuscripts, ancient armour and amulets.
From the Activities Centre, the island opens up in every direction. You can dive or snorkel vibrant reefs, fish in deep blue channels, kiteboard, kayak, paddleboard, watch for whales in season, or head inland for lemur trekking and quad‑biking adventures. At Miavana, even staying put feels like exploring.
Purest Panama
The most active minds, like that of Columbus, are always thinking ‘what next?’, and that was certainly true of entrepreneur Dan Behm. Already enamoured with Central America thanks to Costa Rica, he found himself captivated by the sleepy surfer community of Bocas del Toro in neighbouring Panama. In a bold new chapter, he bought Isla Frangipani – one of more than 200 islands, islets and cays scattered across this Caribbean haven – and created Nayara Bocas del Toro, a fresh benchmark in off‑grid luxury.
What emerged when the resort opened in 2022 was sublime: sixteen overwater pool villas with teak interiors and glass floor inlays, and four bamboo treehouses crafted from reclaimed Panama Canal timber; all designed to sit lightly on land and water.
And that lightness is no accident. Before construction, five independent environmental studies mapped coral, seagrass, mangrove roots, tidal flows and terrestrial biodiversity. Every structure was built on stilts above intact mangrove systems, with no dredging, no land clearing and no wastewater discharge. Harvested rainwater and 100% solar power were integrated from the outset.
Nayara’s conservation work deepens that natural abundance. Engineered habitat structures beneath the villas have already matured into flourishing reefs, and the team is actively rebuilding coral in the bay to strengthen long‑term resilience. Mangroves and seagrass beds remain untouched, forming sheltered channels perfect for paddleboarding and kayaking, often accompanied by dolphins, rays or turtles.
For more energetic days, sea kayaking, snorkelling, sailing, surfing and diving all launch directly from the island, opening up a marine realm that is both elemental and exquisitely remote.
