“How many times have we heard the Australian national anthem at the Olympics? It seems like hundreds. Next time, listen to the words, and you’ll hear the reason that we at Journeysmiths love this country: ‘Our land abounds in nature’s gifts, Of beauty rich and rare…’ The best gifts need some unwrapping, and that’s what we do at Journeysmiths.”
1. Arkaba Conservancy
‘A heritage gem within a landscape transformed’
The best romances go from near tragedy to sublime delight, from austerity and shades of grey to plenitude bathed in golden light. That’s the feeling you get when you stay at the Arkaba Homestead, a place that’s being transformed year by year into something incredible.
This was once a landscape where the only things in abundance were the sights, sounds and smell of sheep. Now, those introduced grazers are gone, along with feral cats and rabbits, and what has returned is amazing: mobs of emus, snuffling echidnas, and rare yellow-footed rock wallabies, with wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead. Take a quiet walk through the bush here, inhale the rich and complex fragrance, see the flash of a cockatoo, and you’ll be immersed in Australia as it should be.
It’s a landscape reclaimed, but that doesn’t mean a complete erasure of the past. The homestead buildings are much as they were in the 1850s, though that authentic rustic-chic comes with sublime modern comforts such as fine linens in the bedrooms, gourmet food in the dining room, and a gorgeous pool and deck outside.
The homestead is the base for the 40-kilometre Arkaba Bushwalk, an unforgettable two-night expedition through the golden hills and creek beds of the Flinders National Park. Using a traditional swag, you’ll camp out under the stars.
2. Bamurru Plains
'A uniquely Australian safari destination'
If you’ve experienced a luxury safari camp in the Okavango Delta, you’ll quickly understand the routines and delights of Bamurru Plains. The 40-minute fly-in from Darwin will unfold the glittering verdant spectacle of the Mary River wetlands, and when you touch down you’ll be surrounded by 300 square kilometres of land where commercial water buffalo farming coexists with confident and flourishing Australian tropical wildlife.
By all-terrain vehicle, skimming airboat, or perhaps by helicopter, you’ll head out on the twice-daily adventures typical of African safari destinations. But instead of elephants, there are buffalo, and the antelope are wallabies, while the zebra are wild brumby horses. Crocodiles are what the two continents share, and this place has the highest concentration in Australia.
Head to the main lodge and you'll find the relaxed bush-luxury vibe continues, helped by long-table dining, deep sofas aplenty and an infinity pool of perfection.
Neighbouring UNESCO double-listed Kakadu National Park is within reach. We can arrange a breathtaking tour of highlights that the guides at Bamurru Plains call ‘Kakadu in a Day’.
3. Davidson’s Arnhemland
‘Privileged access to ancient cultural richness’
Australia works on a different timescale. It’s ancient and unhurried; its rhythms are gradual and rewarding to those who understand the virtues of humility and patience. The custodian people know this and have woven such wisdom into traditions and folklore.
There are some people, like Max Davidson, who have the necessary insight into the forces of Australia to be trusted and granted quiet privileges. Working in partnership with the Yolŋu custodians, his Arnhemland Safari Eco Lodge allows a small number of visitors to experience the remarkable rock art galleries in the hidden overhangs of Mount Borradaile. They span an estimated 50,000 years and even depict scenes of arriving European ships.
Once on the ground, you’ll relax in a shady oasis of modern yet unpretentious bungalow buildings. Huge walls of windows beneath corrugated iron roofs let in the sights and sounds of the bush. There’s a scattering of woolshed-style cabins, all with ensuites and verandas, but such is the desire to keep visitor numbers low that you’ll almost never find them all occupied.
This camp sits within 700 square kilometres of exclusively leased land, which is a vast untouched wilderness full of landscape and wildlife splendours. There are rugged rocky ranges, idyllic billabongs and languid waterways complete with basking crocodiles. With about 275 species of birds found locally and plenty of fish to catch, this place isn’t just about the rock art.
4. Bullo River Station
'Frontier spirit & conservation on a working cattle station'
Anyone who knows a farmer appreciates that they are resourceful, resilient, courageous, skilful and wise. And cattle farmers of the Australian Outback? They’re all that, plus an impressive bagful of grit. This is the conclusion you’ll reach from the viewing platform over the stockyard at Bullo River Station, a ranch of almost half a million acres.
Despite the scale, financial margins were always slim; scant reward for an isolated and dangerous life. Facing financial ruin, Bullo River Station reinvented itself so that cattle now coexist with conservation, and guests can observe while staying in luxury.
To stay here is to be in the setting of an Australian classic book about the changing ethos and fortunes of the station: Sarah Henderson’s ‘From Strength to Strength’.
We recommend observing the coordination of sweat, dust and exhilaration of life on the station. See people, vehicles, helicopters, dogs and horses combine as a team oiled by experience.
You might return from a trip to an Aboriginal rock art site in time for sunset before using the station’s telescope to spot the Giant Emu constellation. Your fellow guests may have explored the gorge in an electric boat and tell you tales of the barramundi that got away.
5. El Questro Homestead
'Polished wilderness: the romantic face of the Outback'
With an enigmatic name that poses more questions than gives answers, El Questro is a famous former cattle station in the frontier East Kimberley region. Whatever the origin of its name – and it’s probably just the whimsy of a frontier cowboy – the undeniable fact is that the reserve of El Questro, at double the size of Greater London, is a paradise for exploration on foot. There are 200 kilometres of established trails in the vicinity of the homestead.
It would be easy to fall into the trap of the pun of ‘gorge-ous’ to describe where you can discover. Will it be boulder-strewn Emma Gorge, or fantastically weathered Amalia Gorge, or the fern-lined El Questro Gorge? Then there are the languid waters of the Chamberlain Gorge below the homestead itself.
Nowadays, El Questro Homestead is a ten-suite hideaway of luxury perfection. Pick of the bunch of the options is the dual-aspect Chamberlain Suite, which cantilevers out from its prime rocky position. The wraparound deck is the perfect place for a cool glass with a spectacular view of the gorge. Forget taking a river plunge, though; there are too many crocs here. Stick to the swimming pool.
Locals are thoroughly involved in twice-daily excursions such as boat trips up the gorge for spotting diminutive rock wallabies, endangered Gouldian finches and spectacular rainbow bee-eaters. Other delights include helicopter trips to the Bungle Bungles and exclusive access times at the nearby Zebedee hot springs.
6. Finniss River Lodge
'Contemporary wetland Outback & culinary flair'
You don’t need to worry too much about making small talk with the guests at the champagne and canapé reception: they’re peaceful and content Brahman cows. Manners dictate that the nibbles aren’t beef-based, so you’ll be enjoying mini kangaroo burgers. Tomorrow, you’ll be witnessing your new friends being cared for by the farmers: the family’s third generation of cattle pastoralists.
This is Finniss River Lodge, once a long and draining day of travel from Darwin and now just a couple of hours away. It’s not just for those who want an Outback experience but are short on time; it’s also small, personal and perfectly suited to those who crave real connection with their hosts and authenticity of experiences.
With a maximum of 12 guests in six luxury suites, this place is personal, and you’ll find the dining experience epitomises what can be done when there’s a focus on quality over quantity. With time to involve you in what you eat, the chef forages the landscape for wild plants and will show you techniques such as paperbark roasting.
We suggest you take time for a walkabout safari with a local guide, learning about the folklore of the landscape, medicinal and carnivorous plants, and spotting the diverse local wildlife. A highlight might be to find a bowerbird’s labour of love before returning to base and watching the Long Room’s webcam view of the billabong to see what emerges once you have gone.
7. True North Adventure Cruise
‘The ultimate luxury cruise to inaccessible wonders’
“Surely that’s not possible,” you’ll say as the captain edges closer to the raging torrent. But it is, and soon you’ll be giggling, soaked and amazed as the bow of your 50-metre boat is under a waterfall plunging straight into the sea. Such things are possible for True North, a vessel with a draught of about 2 metres and thin enough to navigate up channels that are inaccessible to others.
What goes for hidden inlets and marine gorges headed by waterfalls is also true for reefs. This boat can get close, very close, so you’ll be snorkelling right off the deck. And those decks? They’re multi-level vantage points for great views and relaxation, and the one at the stern is home to a helicopter for excursions inland.
With 18 cabins and an expert crew of 22 young and outgoing Aussies, an adventure cruise on True North is one of constant discovery and wonder. That even extends to the food because the open door of the galley invites you to get involved.
Extraordinary natural wonders like the Horizontal Falls are followed by immersive guided walks with naturalists, and a day may finish trying on the luxury pearl and diamond jewellery that’s been lent by Kimberley artisans.

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!

A safari in the wilds of Africa allows you space to pause and wonder – to gaze and reflect. Epic landscapes, the balanced beauty of creation, the absence of hurry. You would imagine that the day’s adventures end with the setting sun. But as one star disappears and the heavens turn indigo to black, millions more appear, filling the unpolluted skies. We’ve chosen a few of our favourite spots for safari stargazing.
A sighting of any one of the Big Five is a cause for great excitement. But spotting a rhino in the wild? It is one of those things that dreams are made of. At around a tonne in weight, and generally considered to be the second largest land mammal, they shouldn’t be hard to see, but poaching has devastated population numbers.
