Departure: 11 pm on Day 1
(Returns 7 am on Day 7)

Given that Athens was the dominant seafaring city-state in Ancient Greece, there's no more appropriate place to start and finish this circular voyage around the sparkling Aegean Sea.

Having had all afternoon to settle in and discover some of the delights of her suite and the various decks, Joanna was able to enjoy a fabulous meal before the ship set sail that evening.

Slipping out of the harbour of Piraeus, Silver Spirit is worlds apart from the oar-driven triremes that undertook similar voyages from the 7th century BC onwards.
Day 2
Syros
Arrival: 8am on Day 2
Departure: 7pm on Day 2

When Joanna woke up on her first morning, she was close to arriving on the Greek island of Syros. Never one to relax entirely, she was in the gym and enjoying the outdoor peloton bike before breakfast!

Syros, known as Syra in Homer’s Odyssey, is one of the scattered jewels known as the Cyclades islands. A quiet paradise of distinctive charm, it was a place where Joanna’s excursion options included a walking tour of historic Hermopolis, a boat tour to secluded coves, and hikes over the island. You could also choose an immersive culinary experience involving exploring local markets, sampling island delicacies and learning cooking techniques honed over generations since antiquity.
Day 3
Crete, Agios Nikolaos
Arrival: 8am on Day 3
Departure: 7pm on Day 3

Of more than 6,000 Greek islands, Crete is the largest. That means that it has also accumulated a vast wealth of historical and cultural relevance, which is what Joanna enjoyed from the next port of Agios Nikolaos.

Once the centre of the Bronze Age Minoan civilisation, Crete has also been ruled by Mycenaeans, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Venetians, and Ottomans.

Joanna’s excursion options here included the Minoan palace of Knossos and city of Heraklion, the Lassithi Plateau and the cave where Zeus was born, and a boat trip with plenty of swimming opportunities to the island of Spinalonga.
Day 4
Rhodes
Arrival: 8am on Day 4
Departure: 7pm on Day 4

The historic capital of the Dodecanese archipelago, Rhodes was once home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world: the Colossus statue. No traces remain, since it collapsed in an earthquake in 226 BC, but we know that it rivalled the modern-day Statue of Liberty in its size.

Arriving on her far-from-colossal cruise boat, Joanna’s potential excursions included a day sea kayaking , an adventure into ‘Butterfly Valley’, a tour to the ancient Rhodes acropolis and temple of Athena Lindia, and a visit to the palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes.
Day 5
Kusidasi, Turkey
Arrival: 8am on Day 5
Departure: 11pm on Day 5

Despite being exceptionally well-travelled, Joanna had never been to Turkey, so she was particularly pleased that this voyage included a day in Kusidasi.

It was fascinating to experience a different culture, try new foods, and to venture to the ancient city of Ephesus. Home of another lost wonder of the ancient world – the Temple of Artemis – Ephesus is also said to have been where Mary, mother of Jesus, spent her final days. The later departure of the boat that day allowed for guests to attend an exclusive evening concert in Ephesus.
Day 6
Mykonos
Arrival: 8am on Day 6
Departure: 10pm on Day 6

Circling back towards the mainland of Greece from the Turkish coast, Silver Spirit slipped back into the Cyclades islands during the night between Joanna’s fifth and sixth days.

In Greek myth, Mykonos was the location of the great battle between the Olympian gods and the super-strong Gigantes. The rocks scattered around the island are said to be the bodies of those slain by Heracles.

Known for its sugar-cube white houses and iconic windmills, Mykonos is also one of the most glamorous Greek islands. Excursions to beautiful beaches and even to neighbouring Delos were on offer, but most just wanted to soak up the atmosphere in idyllic Mykonos Town.
Day 7
Athens
Arrival: 7am on Day 7

Returning home to the Athenian port and naval base of Piraeus, Silver Spirit’s early arrival allows for a leisurely disembarkation and the chance to spend the whole day exploring this 2,500-year-old city. Ancient sites such as the citadel of the Acropolis are only a short transfer away.

For many, this end to the island-hopping voyage is just the start of the next chapter in their Journeysmiths-curated itinerary. We’ll have arranged elegant accommodation, perhaps an exclusive and immersive excursion such as an authentic culinary foray around the Peloponnese peninsula, or maybe a seamless transfer to another country on your European tour.

If you’re seeking a first-hand Silversea Silver Spirit review, Joanna’s journey reveals what makes this ship a standout in Silversea’s luxury fleet. With just under 600 guests and an exceptional space-to-guest ratio, Silver Spirit strikes a great balance between elegance and intimacy - ideal for those valuing personal space, impeccable service and immersive experiences.

  • Ocean-view suites, many with private verandas
  • World-class dining options, from fine French cuisine to regional specialities
  • 24-hour butler service in every suite, ensuring comfort and attention to detail
  • Elegant lounges and open decks designed for both socialising and quiet reflection.

Day 1: Athens, the Origin of it All

Nowhere can stake a better claim to be the cradle of Western civilisation than the glorious city of Athens, where every stone seems to breathe with history, wisdom and myth. This is a place where your footsteps will follow those of gods, warriors and philosophers, and the towering Acropolis stands to remind you of the city’s golden age.

You can explore the ruins of the ancient agora where Socrates debated and democracy was born, visit the Theatre of Dionysus, the kernel from which all Western drama grew, and imagine the voices of Euripides and Sophocles echoing through time.

There’s more too: the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena, the Erechtheion, and modern museums housing priceless artefacts that are evidence of the unbroken thread between our society today and where it started.

Tips from Joanna

  • I recommend staying in Athens before or after the cruise (or both!).We can arrange truly exclusive experiences, from a behind-the-scenes day with a Greek fashion designer to a private helicopter flight to the ancient sanctuary of Delphi.
  • In fact, a Silversea cruise through the Aegean could just be part of a longer European trip. At Journeysmiths, we will make sure that these elements are seamlessly blended.
  • Prioritise visiting the Acropolis early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds, or in the golden glow of the early evening. If you’d prefer more privacy, we can arrange out-of-hours access — when you'll share this extraordinary site with only a handful of others.
  • Don’t miss the Changing of the Guard ceremony outside the Greek Parliament — it’s a unique display of tradition, precision, and a touch of theatrical flair that perfectly captures Athens’ timeless spirit.
  • There's an amazing viewpoint just before the main entrance to the Acropolis. Climb the stone-cut steps and you'll be rewarded with a 360 vista of Athens, all the way to the harbour of Piraeus, where Silver Spirit will be waiting for you.

Day 2: Syros, the Odyssey Underway

The elegant heart of the Cyclades islands, Syros is a place of rich historical culture that blends neoclassical grandeur with authentic Greek charm. The main town, Ermoupoli, is a masterpiece of marble-paved squares and pastel mansions where the majestic Apollo Theatre reflects its 19th-century prosperity and artistic legacy.

Ano Syros, built by the Venetians in medieval times, is a place of innumerable steps and a mesh of narrow streets that converge on the hilltop site of the Catholic cathedral of Saint George. It’s from here that you get a fantastic panoramic view of the other Cyclades: Tinos, Delos, Mykonos, Paros, Andros and Naxos.

Ruins at Kastri, dated to around 2,800 BC, show that Syros had some of the earliest settlements in the region. No wonder, therefore, that the island featured in Homer’s epic journey-story, The Odyssey, where it was the home of Eumaeus the swineherd.

Tips from Joanna

  • Make use of your personal butler! Each suite comes with one, and they’ll help you with anything, 24 hours a day. From advice to shoe-cleaning, to bringing breakfast in bed, nothing is too much for them.
  • That minibar? Don’t be scared of enjoying it, because drinks are included. You’ll find it gets magically re-stocked, almost like an immortal creature from Greek myth.
  • There are nine different suite categories, some offering multiple bedrooms. I was sharing with a friend, so we had a twin-bed option. If you want to push the boat out, the ultimate choice is the Owner’s Suite.
  • The suite’s interactive TV isn’t just full of entertainment channels but is also where you can access the interactive ‘My Silversea’ platform. You can see what excursions you have booked, make changes, reserve tables for meals, and so much more.

Day 3: Crete, Home of the Minotaur

Predating classical Greek civilisation, the Minoans were the ancient inhabitants of the island of Crete. Home of King Minos, Crete’s lure is the grand palace of Knossos, where you can wander the ruins while imagining the fate of the young Athenians sent to Minos to face the Minotaur in the labyrinth. It was Theseus, a hero of six legendary challenges, who added one more by killing this half-man/half-bull monster.

Crete is a place where you may want to marvel at remarkable Minoan artefacts in Heraklion’s museum, discover the charms and hospitality of traditional mountain villages, or perhaps have a cooking masterclass to learn about distinctive Cretan dishes. With the Samaria Gorge for hiking and the picture-perfect Balos Lagoon for swimming, among many other natural wonders, Crete offers plenty for active travellers too.

Tips from Joanna

  • I recommend booking most of your excursions in advance on the 'My Silversea' platform to create the structure of your excursions around your personal interests. Then you can fine-tune things on the boat with advice from your butler, other crew members and your fellow travellers.
  • If you’re travelling with family or as a group of friends, it’s well worth booking your own bespoke transport and guide (organised, of course, by the excursion staff). That way, you can have an experience completely tailored to your interests.
  • Cindy, the tour organiser on the boat, was an ever-present expert on deck five. I suggest dropping by to ask her advice about activity levels and other insider knowledge.
  • If you don’t fancy going on an excursion on any particular day, fear not. The crew organises on-board activities like bingo and quizzes for those who stay on the boat. Or you could just relax by the pool with even fewer people than usual.
  • The excursions can be full-day or half day (morning or afternoon), with loads of choices. We enjoyed doing our own thing for the morning and then having a half-day excursion in the afternoon, but you could do the reverse.
Europe Greece Rhodes Lindos Istock 545639552 Credit Tunart

Day 4: Rhodes, a Crossroads of Cultures

Known as the ‘Island of the Sun’ on account of its dedication to the sun god Helios, Rhodes is the largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands and lies just off the coast of Turkey.

Its geographical position has always favoured it as a crossroads of trade and culture between Europe, Asia and Africa, and ancient merchants arriving on Rhodes were greeted by the ‘Colossus’ statue dedicated to Helios.

Rhodes is a place to wander cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed old town of the port of Rhodes, where Crusader knights left their mark amid Byzantine and Ottoman layers. Further ancient delights lie in the south, at Lindos, with its acropolis and Doric temple. Other excursions here range from thrilling off-road adventures to an immersive cookery masterclass, or even a Rhodian pottery workshop.

Tips from Joanna

  • Silversea’s Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T) ‘Culture Through Cuisine’ programme is perfect for foodies. The S.A.L.T kitchen offers an ever-changing menu inspired by local specialities, there are enrichment talks, demonstrations and tastings, and dovetailed culinary excursions.
  • I loved the boat’s Arts Café, a trendy and invigorating spot for a superb cup of coffee, delicious pastries, and platters of fruit and cheeses. Our regular evening venue was Seishin, with its wonderful Japanese dishes.
  • They’re great at catering to specific dietary requirements, and you can even meet the chef to discuss the specifics. I’m a vegetarian and had no problem at all enjoying more choices than I could have imagined.
  • If you’re a jazz and blues fan, then Silver Note is the place to eat your evening meal. We finished our meals with drinks in the cocktail bar watching the sunset.
  • You can get great Italian pizzas at any time during the day at Spaccanapoli and cook your own food at The Grill. In short, you can be casual if you want to give your best clothes a rest.
Europe Turkey Ephesus Library Of Celsus Istock 1328802100 Credit Ozgurdonmaz

Day 5: Kuşadası, a Turkish Delight

Perched on Turkey’s Aegean coast, the port town of Kusadasi is a sun-soaked resort to some and a portal to ancient wonders and mythical tales to others. Just inland lies Ephesus, one of the best-preserved classical cities in the world, where you can walk the marble streets once trodden by Mark Antony, St. Paul and the Virgin Mary.

Ephesus was famous in its day for the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and its most dramatic structure nowadays is the façade of the Library of Celsus. You can explore these remarkable spectacles, along with recent excavations at the terraced houses, in the company of an expert archaeologist.

Other highlights in and around Kusadasi include sampling artisanal olive oils with local producers, discovering the Aegean coast by private yacht, and the most perfect end to the day: an exclusive concert in Ephesus.

Tips from Joanna

  • Don’t expect everyone on board to be from the same country. It was an eclectic bunch from all round the world on our voyage, and this made it really interesting.
  • The age structure was also surprising. I was expecting very few younger travellers, but there was a real mixture of people from their 30s upwards. There was even a handful of kids.
  • There were more single people than I was anticipating. I took a friend, but having seen how many people were travelling on their own and loving it, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this kind of cruise to individuals. They even had singles events on the boat every evening.
  • Expect to enjoy yourself! On a boat this perfect, that seems silly to say, but don’t hold back on getting the most out of everything it offers. That was my approach, and I loved it all.
Europe Greece Mykonos Windmills Istock 1328117156 Credit Aletheia97

Day 6: Mykonos, a Place that Rocks

The name ‘Mykonos’ is derived from an ancient Greek word translating as ‘a pile of stones’. It’s certainly rocky, but those mythical origin of the boulders is that they are the bodies of the Gigantes. This supremely strong and aggressive race was slain in battle by the Olympian gods and their accomplice, Heracles.

Mykonos can rock in other ways nowadays. It’s vibrant and exciting and known for its happy atmosphere, which has attracted a jet-set and alternative crowd since the 1960s. Its other reputation is for its steady wind, which has driven its picturesque windmills for countless generations. A beautiful place, perfect for a drink at sunset, is ‘Little Venice’, where rows of fishing houses perch above the sea.

From a mosaic workshop to a S.A.L.T masterclass in Mykonian cheese making, or an adventure to the neighbouring sacred island of Delos, there are plenty of other options too for enjoying time on Mykonos.

Tips from Joanna

  • Every evening at 9.30pm there was a show in the ship’s theatre; great fun, with excellent singers and performers. At other times, musicians add ambience to the restaurants. We wish we had discovered the DJ earlier than our last night!
  • If you fancy trying your luck, there’s also a casino. We had a go at the slots and enjoyed a bit of atmosphere at the blackjack table.
  • We aren’t smokers, but we could see the appeal of the club atmosphere in the Connoisseurs’ Lounge. It looked like a good place to network and make connections.
  • There’s a great gym and spa. We were in the gym before breakfast every day, getting in the mood for excursions.
  • Need retail therapy? The boat has a boutique with the high-end products that are a suitable souvenir of a luxury cruise.

Day 7: Athens Encore

Having ventured as far as Crete, a return to Athens might be likened to the journey of the hero Theseus. The boat of this Minotaur-slaying champion was kept as a memorial in the harbour for several centuries, but because many parts of it had to be replaced to keep it seaworthy, philosophers began to speculate whether it really could be regarded as the same vessel. This ‘Ship of Theseus Paradox’ seems apt for Silver Spirit, which had its middle section completely replaced in 2018.

With such a suitably Greek conundrum to contemplate, the 7th day of this trip is the time to bid farewell to your butler, other crew members, and new friends before seeing Athens again in a rejuvenated way.

Then, it’s on to new adventures, and with Journeysmiths you’ll enjoy a seamless transition to the next stage. That might be a luxury stay in Athens with curated exclusive experiences or further discovery on a bespoke wider European itinerary.

Joanna's Five Highlights

  • 1. The feeling of space on the boat. There was nowhere on the boat that ever felt crowded. There were loads of nooks to have a quiet moment, and all the facilities were there to be enjoyed without needing to jostle.
  • 2. The service. With a superb guest-to-staff ratio, every aspect of the service had an unhurried and personal elegance. You can tell that the crew are highly trained, and they always have smiles on their faces.
  • 3. The food. For the range, the quality, and the quantity of the culinary offering, a Silversea cruise stands out from the crowd. Faultless, even for a vegetarian.
  • 4. The choice of excursions. Every port had loads of options to suit every interest, and they were easy to book. You could do this cruise several times and enjoy different experiences on each occasion.
  • 5. Facilities and entertainment. I am sure there were some people who stayed on the boat for the whole time because there were so many things to enjoy and do without setting foot ashore. Anyone on a long cruise can value the occasional day off.

It’s always a struggle to think of Christmas presents in the modern world. Giving our loved ones more objects to unwrap seems increasingly pointless, which is why gifts of life-long memories are so much more appropriate. And if those memories are shared, then giving really does become the same as receiving. A safari holiday at Christmas with family, friends, or both, is not just generosity, it’s an investment.

Where to track rhino

A sighting of any one of the Big Five is a cause for great excitement. But spotting a rhino in the wild? It is one of those things that dreams are made of. At around a tonne in weight, and generally considered to be the second largest land mammal, they shouldn’t be hard to see, but poaching has devastated population numbers. Park authorities have to be very cautious with any information they share about rhino numbers and regarding their whereabouts. An encounter, therefore, truly is a privilege.

Antarctica: What to Expect from a Polar Cruise

Nothing can really prepare you for an expedition in the white continent. It really is a destination quite unlike any other.
