Luxury Elevated Above the Chobe Floodplain
Chobe Chilwero began as a small, simple bush lodge before evolving into one of the Chobe Riverfront’s most refined retreats. Its ridge‑top position has always been its defining asset, offering elevated views over the floodplains and easy access to the river’s exceptional wildlife. Over time, the lodge’s intimate scale and high‑quality guiding became central to its character, distinguishing it from larger properties in the area.

A major redesign introduced a distinctive timber‑and‑thatch aesthetic by South African architect Jonathan Ridler, with terracotta tiles, handmade baths and curated African artefacts creating a warm, museum‑like atmosphere. Today, as part of Sanctuary Lodges, Chilwero blends polished hospitality with its original bush‑camp spirit, retaining the sense of closeness to nature that shaped its earliest days.

Location

Within northern Botswana’s Chobe National Park – a tract of more than 11,000 km² noted for its exceptional numbers of elephants – the hilltop setting of Chilwero looks across the Chobe River to Namibia’s Caprivi Strip. Just a few kilometres downstream, the river meets the Zambezi at Kazungula, the rare four‑country junction of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Only ten minutes from Kasane International Airport, the lodge feels like a secluded and green oasis even in the dry season, its lawns protected by an electric fence that keeps wandering elephants from reshaping the gardens.

Accomodation
Each of the 15 brick-and-thatch cottages at Chobe Chilwero are bright, luxurious and extremely spacious. Gorgeously furnished with a large sumptuous bed, solid hardwood furniture and a fully-stocked mini bar, you’ll have plenty of room to kick back and relax. Step into the en-suite bathroom and you’ll find a double washbasin, large rain shower and a free-standing bathtub big enough for two to share a soak in after a day of exploring the National Park.

To the back of each suite a private deck awaits with views of the well-pruned gardens and beyond to the river. Opt for the romantic Pool Suite and add your own plunge pool to the list of amazing amenities.
Chilwero’s main area is equally opulent. Sink into the sofas in the elegant lounge whilst getting lost in a book from the library; peruse intriguing wares at the curio shop; or spend some time recuperating in the only full service spa in the Botswana safari circuit. There’s also a serene pool surrounded by sunloungers, ideal for basking in the sun or shade bathing beneath the trees.

Whether you choose to dine in the inviting inside dining area or outside on the veranda, meals at the camp are exquisite with views to match. After indulging in a mouthwatering meal, take a seat around the boma (traditional campfire) to share stories from your game drives over a glass of South African vino while countless stars twinkle overhead.

Experiences
  • Watch the world’s largest elephant population gather along the Chobe River, especially dramatic in the dry months when herds stream in from the interior.
  • Drive the riverfront in 4WD vehicles, tracking big game and predators drawn to the permanent water.
  • Cruise the Chobe on afternoon riverboat safaris, ending with sundowners as hippos surface and birdlife flares across the banks.
  • Photograph wildlife from a specialist photographic boat, equipped with raised decks and 360‑degree swivel seats for unobstructed shots.
  • Fish for bream and tiger fish on a catch‑and‑release outing, exploring quieter channels away from the main river traffic.
  • Cross to Victoria Falls in about an hour, pairing Chobe’s wildlife with one of Africa’s great natural landmarks.
  • Absorb exceptional birdlife – from carmine bee‑eaters nesting in riverbanks to relaxed jacanas and kingfishers flitting through the reeds.

Why We Include Chobe Chilwero in Our Journeys

Superb accessibility makes Chilwero an effortless component of any Botswana itinerary: Kasane Airport is only minutes away, and Victoria Falls sits comfortably within reach. Its position works beautifully as a gentle introduction to safari before heading into wilder, fly‑in regions, or as a restorative finale with easy onward travel.

Suites are spacious enough for children to share without compromise, and dedicated activities keep younger guests engaged. Although the lodge has an undeniably adult, polished atmosphere, it remains genuinely welcoming for families, offering comfort, convenience and excellent wildlife right on the doorstep.

Conservation
Conservation
Chobe Chilwero’s parent company, Sanctuary Retreats, supports major conservation work across its portfolio, including its partnership with Rhino Conservation Botswana to translocate endangered black and white rhinos from South Africa into the safer Moremi Reserve. These rhinos receive continuous monitoring and protection, strengthening Botswana’s long‑term rhino population and contributing to regional wildlife security.
Community
Community
Through group‑wide programmes, Sanctuary Retreats invests in community empowerment. Its Bike Shop Programme in Kenya expands mobility for health workers, students and low‑income earners, improving access to education, healthcare and employment. Guest stays across the portfolio help sustain such initiatives, linking tourism revenue to practical, locally driven development outcomes.
Environment
Environment
The environmental policy of Sanctuary Retreats emphasises reducing operational impact across all lodges. Measures include solar power use, water‑saving systems, responsible waste management and staff training in sustainable practices. Guests are encouraged to follow low‑impact guidelines, helping protect sensitive ecosystems such as the Chobe River floodplain and supporting long‑term environmental stewardship.
