A Luxury Treehouse Perched Above the Okavango
Shinde is one of the Okavango Delta’s original camps, with roots stretching back to the early era of Botswana’s photographic safaris. Its lineage runs through Ker & Downey & Selby; pioneers who helped establish classic safari travel in the Delta’s northern concessions.

A complete rebuild in 2020 transformed the camp into the elegant, treehouse‑inspired retreat seen today; a modern expression of Ker & Downey’s long‑standing reputation for intimacy, atmosphere and year‑round land‑and‑water exploration.

Location

Shinde Camp sits on an island in the NG21 private concession of the Okavango Delta, just north of Moremi. Most guests arrive by light aircraft into Shinde Airstrip, though those pairing it with sister camp Okuti can enjoy a thrilling boat transfer, travelling through narrow channels alive with wildlife.

The concession supports prolific lion, leopard, wild dog, elephant and red lechwe, along with superb birdlife. Because NG21 is private land, Shinde can offer night drives and off‑road exploration, alongside year‑round game drives, boating, mokoro excursions and guided walks.

Accommodation

If you like your views enhanced by tree trunks, branches and foliage, then Shinde doesn’t disappoint. There are eight expansive, raised tented rooms, with views sweeping across the plains and lagoons of the Delta. Each has a large bedroom connected to a spacious deck furnished with classic safari chairs and loungers, perfect for soaking up this breath‑taking location.

Inside, the tents include a separate lounge area with writing desk, and a generous en‑suite bathroom featuring indoor and outdoor showers, double basins and a freestanding bath. One tent is a two‑bedroom unit, ideal for families of up to five who want to stay together without losing privacy.
The camp’s unique central lodge peeks out from the trees, built over different levels and linked by wooden walkways. It comprises indoor and outdoor dining areas, a comfortable lounge and a fire‑pit deck where guests gather after dark. Nearby, a secluded swimming pool, sunk into the decking, offers a quiet spot for reading, dozing or simply watching the light change over the floodplains between activities.

Meals are typically enjoyed on the open deck or under the trees, with the camp’s intimate scale creating a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. Whether it’s breakfast at first light or dinner by lantern glow, the setting ensures every meal feels closely connected to the Delta.

Experiences

  • Set out on off‑road game drives, tracking lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog across the floodplains with the freedom to follow sightings wherever they lead.
  • Venture out after dark on night drives, watching the Delta shift into its nocturnal rhythm as civets, genets, owls and predators emerge.
  • Glide through the channels by mokoro, moving silently between reeds and lilies while birdlife and smaller creatures reveal themselves at close range.
  • Explore the waterways by motorboat, navigating crystal‑clear lagoons and narrow channels alive with hippo, elephant and dazzling birdlife.
  • Join guided bush walks, stepping into the Delta on foot to learn about tracks, behaviour, ecology and the subtleties you miss from a vehicle.
  • Photograph wildlife from elevated decks, capturing elephants, red lechwe and predators as they move through the floodplains below the treehouse‑style camp.

Why We Include Shinde in Our Journeys

Shinde earns its place in our journeys for its magical, tree‑sheltered setting and its versatility: wonderfully romantic outside school holidays, yet superb for inquisitive families too.

Its private‑concession freedoms – night drives, walking safaris and off‑road exploration – complement a stay inside Moremi, giving you two contrasting angles on the Delta and a wider sweep of wildlife. And arriving at Shinde from Okuti by boat is, quite simply, unforgettable.

Environment
Environment
Shinde operates with a genuinely low footprint: the camp runs on 100% solar power, uses reverse‑osmosis filtration to eliminate bottled water, and holds a Green Plus Eco‑Tourism Certificate. These systems reduce emissions, plastic waste and transport impact, aligning the camp with Ker & Downey Botswana’s wider environmental commitments.
Community
Community
The parent company maintains long‑standing community partnerships, notably providing monthly financial support to Bana Ba Letsatsi, a centre assisting vulnerable children with food, clothing, educational materials and emergency medical needs. Broader programmes focus on community empowerment, education and socio‑economic development across districts linked to their safari operations.
Conservation
Conservation
Owners of the camp, Ker & Downey’s Salvinia Molesta project is a recent focus to protect the delicate ecosystem of the Okavango Delta. Salvinia Molesta is a non-native aquatic fern which, if left unchecked, is very damaging. K&D are establishing a weevil breeding project at Shinde Camp to help manage the ferns. The weevils will be used as an agent of biological pest control in the area.
