A Historic & Intimate
Nest in the Okavango
Ker & Downey, one of Botswana’s oldest and most established safari operators, has maintained a camp at Okuti for more than a quarter of a century, making it a signature water‑and‑land base in the Xakanaxa region of Moremi Game Reserve. The company’s roots run deep: founded just after the Second World War by Donald Ker and Syd Downey, it grew through the mid‑20th century into one of Botswana’s most respected safari outfits.

Okuti was created to offer year‑round access to the permanent waterways of the Maunachira Channel and is long admired for its distinctive “kingfisher‑nest” design. A full refurbishment in 2024 modernised the camp while preserving its ecological sensitivity and intimate character.

Location

Okuti Camp lies in the heart of Moremi Game Reserve, on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta; a UNESCO‑recognised sanctuary protecting around 40% of this remarkable ecosystem. The camp overlooks a tranquil lagoon on the permanent Maunachira Channel, where wildlife drifts past throughout the day.

This is classic Moremi: a mosaic of channels, lagoons, open plains and riverine woodland that makes game drives exceptionally productive. Being on permanent water also allows year‑round mokoro and motorboat excursions. You can arrive by light aircraft into Xakanaxa Airstrip or drive in by 4WD, turning the journey itself into a game adventure.

Accommodation

Okuti Camp is built around seven distinctive arch-thatched cottages known as Masasas, inspired by traditional reed houses. Five are spacious double or twin units, while two are larger two‑bedroom suites ideal for families or small groups wanting to stay together without sacrificing comfort.

Each Masasa is lined with natural reeds and features generous beds, a relaxed sitting area and an en‑suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers. Large glass doors open onto a private deck overlooking the lagoon, creating a quiet space to watch wildlife drift past throughout the day.
Raised wooden walkways link the rooms to the main areas, making the entire camp fully wheelchair accessible. At the heart of Okuti is a contemporary, open‑plan lounge and bar, a welcoming space to unwind between activities. A wide veranda leads to the swimming pool, where sunloungers catch the afternoon warmth and the surrounding woodland provides a peaceful backdrop.

Meals are served in the dining area, often shared with guides and staff, creating an easy, convivial atmosphere. Fresh, flavourful dishes are enjoyed at a relaxed pace, with the day’s sightings naturally becoming part of the conversation. After dinner, guests gather around the boma’s firelight to reflect on the day beneath the stars.
