For the ultimate stay, however, the pick of the bunch is the awesome canopy cabin. With more than 100 steps up to reach it, you’ll need to avoid excessive luggage, but from this wall-less eyrie, the view over the treetops of the forest is spectacular, particularly at sunrise and sunset.
Sustainability is a core concept at La Manigua, so composting toilets, outdoor showers and solar lighting are standard. You’ll find that the minimal environmental impact extends to the food on offer in the restaurant with local and seasonal ingredients that are always diverse and delicious. Huge windows looking into the branches of the surrounding forest complement the excellent food.
Afterwards, head to the bar above the Guayabero River, which is orientated for excellent sunset views of the Sierra de La Macarena, with squirrel monkeys in attendance.
- The standout attraction here is the Caño Cristales River, a flowing river known for its vibrant array of colours (from bright red to yellow and green), caused by the aquatic plant known as Macarenia Clavijera.
- All hikes and excursions here will be accompanied by the chance to see fascinating wildlife. Look out for macaws, monkeys, toucans, terrapins, and even pink river dolphins.
- For those who aren’t staying in the canopy cabin, the best view of the forest and river from above is on a short hike to El Mirador.
- During the dry season, a trip to the Angosturas Canyon, where the Guayabero River cuts through the rocks of the Guyanese Shield to produce impressive cliffs, is a must.
- Take a hike to the labyrinth of mysterious rock formations known as Ciudad de Piedra (City of the Rocks).
- Enjoy a cacao workshop with a local expert to learn the secrets of chocolate. There’s normally a musical serenade at some point too.
- Kayak along the Laguna del Silencio, a calm and serene experience. It isn’t as silent as the name suggests because of the ever-present birdsong.
